1 Market dynamics European market, week 17 Markets have been very calm, with low demand for practically all products. The weather has been unfavourable, with temperatures considerably below the season average and also snow in Central and Southern Europe. Prices for the most important tropical fruits stand nevertheless above average either because the supply is small due to season switching (avocado, mango) or because Avocado The switch between summer and winter origins is taking place. Available volumes have been very small, with prices considerably above average for big and medium sizes and quite low for small sizes. Mexico is the last winter origin with significant volumes on the market which are nevertheless quickly decreasing, while the supply from the summer sources (Kenya, Peru and South Africa) is developing but is not yet sufficient to fulfil the market needs. The supply is characterized by maturity issues (advanced ripening for the winter sources and early ripening for the summer sources) and an unbalanced composition of sizes (large prevalence of small sizes from all origins). Arrivals will strongly increase in weeks and the market should therefore become balanced in terms of volumes. In the green segment, arrivals from South Africa have strongly developed and prices tended to decrease even though are still above average. Beans The season for overseas products is going to an end and the local production is not yet on the market; prices of extra fine beans have been above average for Kenya and decreasing for the West African origins. Berries - Morocco and Spain are on the market. Dates: First arrivals from South Africa and Mexico Grapes Problems of condition with Chilean grapes and big volumes from India led to market pressure for white grapes with decreasing prices, large price range and high variability of prices; the market for red seedless grapes has been firmer with good prices for crimson seedless and stable prices for redglobe. Kiwi: Chile is on the market with small volumes until now; its crop will be 9% lower than last year but fruit sizing is expected to be larger; New of small production volumes in production areas (limes, papaya, passion fruits and pineapple). Fresh fruits and vegetables of the European production season (peaches, nectarines and melons) are on the market well in advance than last year but in relatively small volumes for now while the stocks of the winter season products (apple, pears and kiwi) are still considerably huge. Zealand will be on the market in mid-may with about tons of green kiwifruit in the season, + 2% in comparison to last year, and tons of the yellow (gold) variety (+80%). The European supply is still big and the stocks available, especially of Italian fruits whose season could extend until mid-june, coupled to the incoming arrivals from the Southern Hemisphere might considerably weigh on prices Lime.Price are reaching record levels as the supply from Brazil is small and Mexico has been practically absent from the market during quite some weeks. Quotations have been increasing daily and reached 13,00-14,00 Euro/ctn with prices for the most requested counts similar among all importers. Prices stand high due also to the very high prices of lemons Mango The sea-freighted fruits from West Africa (Mali, Burkina Faso, Cote d Ivoire) are on the market in relatively small volumes for now. Arrivals are becoming consistent in weeks and will start to be abundant in week The lack of fruits has been particularly felt: prices reached high levels (10,00 Euro/ctn) for all origins and are now starting to become more affordable for the West African fruits. Air-freighted fruits sold at unaffordable prices, exceeding in some cases 7,00 Euro/kg. Melons.The fruits from overseas are going to an end and are being promoted in a view to empty stocks since Spain entered the market with its full range of varieties Papaya The market is strongly undersupplied: it is difficult to find products and prices are considerably above average; imports from uncommon sources (Jamaica) are not enough to top-up the supply: prices might increase further.

2 Passion fruit.. The product is scarcely available from all most important origins but the supply is starting to improve; prices have been above average especially for the fruits from Vietnam. Pineapple.Available volumes are very small and prices stand high above average in all markets reaching 12,50-13,50 Euro/ctn and exceeding 15,00 Euro/ctn for top-brands; the product is frequently not quoted in importers lists. The fruit has been missing also due to the suspension of shipments during the Easter week but the shortage is now expected to extend until August Stone fruits.the last peaches and nectarines from overseas observed large price range but also high prices due to good quality fruits. Morocco entered the market with high prices which have nevertheless decreased as soon as Spain also entered the market. Sales for all sources turned difficult towards the end of the month because of high prices and meteo which not favoured consumption. The market for plums has been under pressure because of big volumes, varied supply and problems of condition; prices tended to decrease. Spain will be on the market in May. The season for tropical and off-season products is about to close and encountered a disappointing market activity in winter; importers complain about low demand in all countries (although imports are increasing year on year, whilst consumption rates are effectively low); the market remain focused on the most important tropical and off-season fruits, those which move big volumes, and few other products meet good demand, which nevertheless tend to be concentrated in some parts of the year only, while minor products are scarcely offered and obtain low prices. The consequences of the climate change have strongly conditioned the winter season: this is bringing longer production seasons in both developed and developing countries but also several problems about volumes supplied and products quality; having markets flooded or undersupplied is becoming increasingly frequent and the dictate balanced markets equal best possible market context seems to be an exception nowadays. The consequences of the climate change will probably extend to the rest of the year and to the years to come. Thus, logistic and supply problems, coupled with a global demand that is destined to growth, could be increasingly observed in the future and might bring further market instabilities. Although the European market has the structure to administrate and manage any incoming supply problem, this won t necessarily be the case of the production areas overseas where, nevertheless, even the most difficult contexts have been successfully faced in the past. However, the climate change is frequently seen as a driver to foster production and products diversification but sometimes also as a market opportunity; on the contrary, it obviously represents an obstacle to food production and sector development in general, especially in the case of small and developing sources, and a risk rather than an opportunity in evolved markets.
