1 Market dynamics European market, week 21 (May 2013) Three long week-ends due to national holidays characterized the month and contributed to slow sales in a dull market; demand has been very low also for product promotions. Given the weather conditions (frequent rains and cold weather) the marketing season for local crops is delayed: the rains postponed harvest and production volumes are therefore not yet fully built up. Prices are good for requested products but availability is scarce (e.g. strawberries, asparagus). Avocado The hass market is under pressure, particularly for small grades. The market is heavy with Peru and South Africa in full export season; prices declined slightly but the situation is worsening in week 22 as arrivals continue coming in. The supply of green varieties is on average but prices are also decreasing because of the trend in the hass segment. Kiwi The first consistent volumes from New Zealand are expected at the beginning of June and could be 20-30% lower than last year with the bulk of the reduction being the gold variety. The kiwis from Chile entered the market in week 17. Kaki Beginning of season for sharon fruits from South Africa. Beans Very small availability and prices are above average for this product, switching from offseason origins to local production; almost no product on the market and very high prices for mange tout. Mango Prices have been quite high as a consequence of the late harvest in West Africa. Volumes sent by sea are small and prices of air freighted fruits rocketed to about 30 Euro/ctn. Multiple origins on the market and low demand. Grapes Prices are above the average, especially for varieties such as crimson seedless and flame as well as for Mexican grapes. The first deliveries from Israel are on the market (extremely high prices for early sweet) while the first volumes from Egypt should reach the market in week 22. Pineapple Prices are on average or slightly above the average depending on the country/market; quotations for top brands stand at about 12,50 Euro/ctn. Limes No product on the market and extremely high prices with sometimes heterogeneous quality; prices for sea freighted fruits have been similar to the price of air-freighted fruits, reaching 15 Euro/ctn. The supply became larger at the beginning of week 22. Lychees First arrivals from Thailand and extremely high prices (over10 Euro/kg); volumes are obviously small (air-freight) so the development of the season will have to be evaluated in the coming weeks. Melons Very short market as volumes from Central America are ending and the local production is delayed; consumers demand is small because of the weather but prices are above average particularly for honeydew, piel de sapo and water melons. The local production of apricots, peaches and nectarines is on the market even though the demand is low because of the weather and the prices practiced at the begging of the season; it is hoped that the delays will not affect the distribution system with excessive concentration of the deliveries in correspondence of the summer fruit demand-peak. As every year, the demand for tropical and offseason fruits is declining (overseas products such as soft fruits and melons from overseas are moving out and will reappear on the market in September-October).
