1 Market dynamics European market, week 34 Markets have been extremely calm due to summer holidays. The market activity has been very low with very low prices and even bad prices in some cases. The demand for overseas products has been low for most products, also because of large volumes of season fruits and the availability of fruits from the Mediterranean area. Sales proved disappointing, with favourable prices only for the products undersupplied (avocado, pineapple, papaya). Avocado- The supply from the Southern Hemisphere origins is regularly decreasing and prices remained high despite the low market activity. The arrivals from Mexico are increasing in volume but not enough to top up the supply also because of quality problems; the first exports from Chile reached the market and will become significant at the end of September. The market for hass avocado might become strongly undersupplied in few weeks. The demand for green varieties has been low because of decreasing volumes from RSA and heterogeneous quality; prices have been weakening Carambola- Small volumes available and increasing prices due to the season gap in Malaysia. Figs - Very large price range for figs from Turkey. Ginger The product quality is weakening due to the near end of the season from China; the price range is considerably huge Kiwi- The movement of kiwifruits improved with demand more active than in the previous weeks; prices of the Chilean fruits started to increase and now largely exceed 15,00 Euro for 10 kg ctn. Lychees Small volumes of air-freighted fruits from Israel and South East Asia encountered very low demand Lime Prices stand above average as a result of smaller volumes proceeding from Mexico (storms in the middle of the season) and Brazil (droughts) and are increasing further. Mango Exporters in Brazil have temporarily suspended exports due to the very low prices in the European market, which allowed recovering better quotations. Prices have are now on average for midsizes but there is lack of big sizes and large volumes of small sizes which do not obtain satisfactory quotations even in the case of fibreless varieties Papaya Small available volumes because of the product shortage in Brazil and rains in Ecuador; prices stand above average and might increase further given the low demand in this part of the year and the low market activity in August Passion fruit Very small available volumes and increasing prices. Pineapple Lack of fruits from Costa Rica is leading to extremely high prices: the product is missing, quotations reached 20,00 Euro/ctn and distributors are not often willing to pay such prices; the fruit is frequently not quoted and importers are trying to fulfil the lack of volumes with imports from other sources; the undersupply is expected to last for another month. The sales of season fruits proceed with a decrease in demand for peaches and nectarines due to the summer holidays; the season is being considered just relatively satisfactory but without excesses of supply, prices disruptions or overlaps of volumes from supplying origins; the first commercialization of apples and pears from the Northern Hemisphere is occurring with a still very timid demand. The market is slowly returning to the normal activity and will be fully operational in mid-september with the beginning of the schools.
