2 GENERAL Hillcrest Centre - General Information President s Message Dear RPHCA Members, It is my pleasure as President of the Riley Park Hillcrest Community Centre Association to write to our members and discuss our current state of affairs. It has been a very productive year. We have moved forward as a board on a number of very important issues moving away from the distractions of the previous years. As many members are aware, our Association and others are still in the midst of a complicated negotiation with the Park Board regarding an updated Joint Operating Agreement. These JOA negotiations are to be taken seriously as it forms the basis for our future involvement in the delivery of valuable and necessary recreation and community services. The Association remains steadfast in our commitment to a true partnership between the Parks Board and the Association going forward. Historically, this Association and numerous others around Vancouver have been instrumental in helping the citizens of Vancouver realize a Parks and Recreation system that is second to none. We believe the Parks Board must commit to individual relationships with individual Associations. This model of a city o neighbourhoods has been a hallmark of the current system and we pledge to preserve this model and remain a positive community partner. To that end, the membership has elected a strong Board whose individually have much to contribute to helping our Association meet lofty objectives and to reach our goal of being the model for all community centres. It is my job as President to help develop an action plan and more importantly, act upon it, I am proud of our progress this board has accomplished to date. We have improved our financial reporting, built a strong program committee, updated our website, and recruited a strong, visionary Board. That said, there is still much to do and this board is committed to having the highest standards. In the past the internal fighting on the board has slowed down progress on some important issues, I am happy to report this board is working hard together to bring the best possible outcomes to the members and users of this centre. It is the goal of this board to make Hillcrest the model board for the City of Vancouver and I am confident with our new Recreational Supervisor Lily Dong and the young dynamic board members that will happen within this next calendar year. This method of teaching is based on the fact that children (students) all over the world learn to speak their native language with ease. Ear training is emphasized so that students become comfortable with the instrument before learning to read music. Ukulele Children Group Level 1 (Group Lessons) Has your child always wanted to learn a string instrument and the guitar is too big? Want to feel motivated by playing the music you love? The ukulele is the best way to start! Why? Because it is small, portable and easy to pick up on - even for the most novice beginners! Given it's size the, Ukulele is perfect for small children. A basic understanding of the easy-to grasp chords will have you strumming a tune in mere days! This is a fun and stressfree environment. Learn basic chords, how to tune the ukulele, and strumming and playing songs. Your child will be playing by the end of the first session. For the adventurous types, improvisation and group jamming/ duets will also be taught. Please bring your own ukuleles and purchase the Alfred's Kids' Ukulele Course 1 Book and bring it to the classes, students will be required to use this book for this program. Find the level appropriate for your age and skill ability. Never taken lessons before or haven t taken lessons for over 6 months? We offer free swim assessments during public swim times. Note: children under the age of 8 must be accompanied during assessment time by an adult. Red Cross Swim Parent and Tot (Ages 4 months to 3 years) Our learn-to-swim program for children ages four months to six years old, and their parents or caregivers. Lessons are designed to be fun, using lots of songs, games, and themes. The first three levels of Red Cross Swim Preschool, Starfish (4 12 months), Duck (12 24 months), and Sea Turtle (24 36 months) focus on water orientation and water safety. Red Cross Swim Preschool (Ages 3 years to 6 years) The last five levels for ages 3 to 6, Sea Otter, Salamander, Sunfish, Crocodile, and Whale, build swimming skills and teach age-specific water safety. This program is designed to appeal to preschool children through games and activities that engage their imagination while they learn skills and increase their knowledge. Looking for Swim & Skate Camp? Visit recreation.vancouver.ca Red Cross Swim Kids (Ages 5 years to 13 years) Our fun, learn-to-swim program for children ages five and older. The program also increases fitness and endurance through enjoyable activities. Red Cross Swim Basics (Adults Level 1 & 2) (ages 14+) Red Cross Swim Basics is a two-level learn-toswim program for adults and teens.
