Useful Information If you need something placed in the Bubbles, you must have it to the editor no later than the 10 th of the month preceding the issue in which it should appear...even earlier is better: To view this newsletter online, type: into your browser address bar. If you want it ed to you, please contact me at the above address. If someone you know is under the weather, had a recent surgery, needs a caring thought, please be sure to contact Aleta Nybakke (# ) If you are in need of temporary medical equipment such as a transport chair, crutches, walkers, bedside commode, riser toilet seat, canes, please contact: Eva Watson #

Carole Burrows is continuing Bob s project of collecting used eyeglasses, cases, and cell phones for the Lions Club. A collection box is located on a shelf in the clubhouse for this purpose. Thank you for your continued support. Fountain East Security Patrol Our evening security patrol is a volunteer opportunity for you to help keep our park safe and secure; however, it is every resident s responsibility to be aware of suspicious activity and/or people in the park. If you feel something is not right, if you see someone on a bicycle or walking in the park who does not belong, you should contact the POLICE immediately. With so many of our residents gone for the summer, we must remember that it is the responsibility of each of us to secure our homes. As residents, we should also be aware of what may be happening at our absent neighbor s home...remember...your vigilance keeps all of us safe and secure. If you would like to participate in our evening security patrol, please contact: Bob Clark (# ). Fountain East Veterans Association (FEVA) FEVA offers the opportunity to retire your tired and worn flags with honor and respect. Please deliver your torn and damaged flags to Dick Baird (#109). Your flag will be honorably retired by the Elks Lodge-sponsored Boy Scout Troop with an official and proper ceremony. June is... National Seafood Month National Candy Month National Dairy Month National Iced Tea Month It happened in June... Ford Motor Company was founded (1903). DeSoto claimed Florida for Spain (1539). Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated (1968). Continental Congress adopted the Flag of the United States (1777). Please remember that there are dumpsters located behind the clubhouse specifically for recycling: cardboard (broken down and flattened), paper, plastics (#1 & #2), cans. Please do not fill up the garbage dumpsters with these items. Do not leave glass beer bottles by the dumpsters (see below). Your use of the recycle bins benefits the association. You may recycle your old household batteries in the basket provided on the front counter in the clubhouse. GLASS RECYCLING Any food or beverage container made of glass can be recycled. When my car trunk is full, I'll make a run, so you can bring well-rinsed glass containers to me (Carolyn Taylor) at Lot 127, or you can call/text me at and I'll pick it up from you. As I have no idea how much glass will be recycled in our park, I'm just guessing that I can handle this alone. Should I be underestimating the amount, I may need help. If you have a truck or SUV and would be willing to assist if necessary, please let me know. The Association won't receive any rebate for this but, as with hazardous waste and battery recycling, we can contribute to reducing pollution. 2

We have already experienced many days of triple digit weather here in Mesa, but we re lovin every day. It means getting outside earlier in the a.m. and spending more time in the swimming pool. The days are getting longer and that means more sunshine. Temps are still in the 90 s at 9:00 p.m. Our air conditioners are running around the clock, and we sometimes have spend time at the mall. Makes you wish you were here. The residents here during the summer are keeping a watchful eye on your mobile while you are away. We still need volunteers for the following: December Soup Supper, Christmas Dinner And Pasta Dinner. Possibly sign up with someone to co-chair one of these events. Enjoy your summer. 7 I am Old Glory: For more than ten score years I have been the banner of hope and freedom for generation after generation of Americans. Born amid the first flames of America's fight for freedom, I am the symbol of a country that has grown from a little group of thirteen colonies to a united nation of fifty sovereign states. Planted firmly on the high pinnacle of American Faith, my gently fluttering folds have proved an inspiration to untold millions. Men have followed me into battle with unwavering courage. They have looked upon me as a symbol of national unity. They have prayed that they and their fellow citizens might continue to enjoy the life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, which have been granted to every American as the heritage of free men. So long as men love liberty more than life itself; so long as they treasure the priceless privileges bought with the blood of our forefathers; so long as the principles of truth, justice and charity for all remain deeply rooted in human hearts, I shall continue to be the enduring banner of the United States of America. Originally written by Master Sergeant Percy Webb, USMC. U.S. Flag Day In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. The United States Army also celebrates the U.S. Army s birthday on this date; Congress adopted "the American continental army" after reaching a consensus position in the Committee of the Whole on June 14, In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1946, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress. 7

Around the Park On May 5 th, at Saturday coffee, a special presentation was made to those residents who have lived in Fountain East for thirty or more years. They were: Arden & Doris Caldwell (1983), Carole Burrows (1985), Betty Copas (1986), Marcy Carroll (1986) and Tony and Jean Ringwald (1987). Park manager J P Pani presented special tee shirts to each person, and, in addition, Kingsley provided the donuts and coffee for the morning. A first-ever Cinco de Mayo fiesta took place in the afternoon on May 5 th. It began with various appetizers plus Margaritas, with or without tequila, served by our own Poncho Atwood. 8

For dinner there was a taco bar with all the trimmings plus chicken enchilada casserole, empanadas and more. This was followed by a dessert buffet which included many Mexican specialties. Connie Coleman proved that she was a true slugger when she broke the piñata. Margret Atwood prepared most of the foods, but it was all the help setting up, taking down, serving and cleaning up that made this a successful event. Thank you...joanne Rebilas who made the guacamole; Carolyn Taylor who made the pico de gallo, Jan Wilhite, Cindy Pryor, Marilyn Peterson, Aleta Nybakke, Linda Magnuson, Karen Matheny, Judy Gemeinhardt, Dick Baird, Bruce Bridge, Jerry Gemeinhardt, Carole Burrows, Bob Clark, Larry Matheny, Lannie Barringer for the Grace, Ted Peterson for taking out the trash. If someone has been missed, please know that your help was truly appreciated...muchas Gracias!!!!! The first summer Out-To-Lunch took place on May 9 with 18 residents enjoying excellent Chinese foods and good company. Thank you Joanne Rebilas and Alice Spearman for making the reservations. For those of you who have never had the pleasure of joining in, please mark your calendars for the second Wednesday of each 9

summer month, look for the sign-up sheet in the hallway and be a part of a yummy outing as we experience various restaurants near our park. Fountain East mothers were honored at coffee on Saturday, May 12. Each mother present was given a rose and a (Hershey s) Hug. Marcie Carroll was given special recognition for having the oldest child (that would be Joanne Rebilas). Marcie received a Mother s Day coffee mug filled with Hugs. 10

Happy Birthday Happy Hour At the monthly birthday party on May 15 two people were honored, Ted Peterson and Sorrell Tankus. There were 18 residents there to enjoy appetizers and cake and to sing Happy Birthday. Some forty cowboys and cowgirls gathered for a Memorial Day Chuck Wagon Feed. They came in jeans, cowboy hats, bandanas, 11

and one on a BIG WHITE HORSE! There was wrangler stew, fruit cup, bread, sarsparilla to drink. And no campfire meal would be complete without S Mores! Thank you Kay Hedges (who peeled tons of potatoes and carrots for the stew), Joanne Rebilas (chuck wagon chief cook) and Alice Spearman (whose imagination knows no bounds when it comes to setting the scene...right down to the laundry on the line and the fires under the cast iron skillets). What a great way to celebrate the holiday 12

Let s have some fun! National Chocolate Éclair Day falls on June 22. The éclair originated during the nineteenth century in France where it was called "pain à la Duchesse" or "petite duchesse" until Some food historians speculate that éclairs were first made by Antonin Carême ( ), the famous French chef. The first known English-language recipe for éclairs appears in the Boston Cooking School Cook Book by Mrs. D.A. Lincoln, published in The word comes from French éclair flash of lightning, so named because it is eaten quickly (in a flash). Some pastry chains in the United States and Canada market Long John doughnuts as éclairs or éclair doughnuts. Long Johns are not identical with éclairs, as Long Johns use doughnut pastry which is yeast-risen or batter-derived, rather than choux dough, which is steam-puffed. Both are usually filled with vanilla pudding or custard and topped with cake icing. To celebrate this wonderful dessert, bring a sack lunch to the clubhouse at noon on the 22 nd then stay for a special éclair treat. Be sure to sign up in the clubhouse hallway. Let s think pink on June 23 Everything s pink at Saturday Coffee...no matter how outrageous...be creative...be brave! Are you pretty in pink, fantastic in fuchsia, rambunctious in rose? Do you dare? Will you wear? Can you share? 13

IT S AN OLD-FASHIONED BBQ Noon-Clubhouse Hamburgers, Brats, Potato Salad, and Baked Beans Plus Root Beer Floats for Dessert $6 Tickets are available at Saturday coffee and from Alice Spearman or Joanne Rebilas It is your patriotic duty to purchase your ticket before June 28 14
