2 DIRECTOR S NOTE: LYNN FORSHAUG Quick Facts about Wisconsin s Medicare Population: Wisconsin is home to 1,087,383 Medicare Beneficiaries. (1.9 % of the U.S. total population). The Medicare population is growing rapidly. (Over 32,000 Wisconsin residents became newly Medicare eligible in 2016). Wisconsin residents have many Medicare plan options. (There are 24 prescription drug plans (PDP s with premiums ranging from $17.00 to $156.00, as well as 71 Medicare Advantage Plans, 18 Special Needs Plan (SNP s) and two Medicare Savings Account (MSA) plans. Plans change annually and vary by county). If someone needs assistance with understanding their prescription drug benefits or other aspects of your Medicare coverage, you can contact SHIP, the State Health Insurance Assistance Program at or address: BOALTC@wisconsin.gov CASE MANAGER S NOTE: CARRIE REESE CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) will start mailing out new MEDICARE cards in April, 2018, to all people who are on Medicare. People living in Wisconsin will start receiving their new Medicare cards in June Instead of a Social Security number, the new card will have a Medicare number that is unique to each person with Medicare. The new card will help protect identities and keep your personal information more secure. Medicare coverage and benefits will remain the same. Medicare will automatically mail the new cards at no cost to the address on file at Social Security. Make sure your address is up to date. These are three tips for consumers after you get your new card: 1. Destroy your old cards right away. 2. Use your new card. Doctors, other health care providers and plans approved by Medicare know that Medicare is replacing the old cards. They will be ready to accept your new card when you need care. 3. Beware of people contacting you about your new Medicare card and asking you for your Medicare number, personal information or to pay a fee for your new card. Treat your new Medicare Number like you treat your Social Security or credit card numbers. Remember, Medicare will never contact you uninvited to ask for your personal information. NUTRITION NOTE Snack Attack- Guilt free nibbles: Though it s supposed to make you feel guilty, snacking is not necessarily a bad thing, unless your idea of a snack is a big bowl of chocolate ice cream, a bag of potato chips or a generous slice of carrot cake. Healthy snacking can actually provide you with several benefits. It can keep you from second helpings at your next meal or prevent you from a hungerfueled cookie binge. It also gives you a much needed energy boost. When you snack, make sure you do so in moderation or opt for food that gives you a nutrient boost such as: 1. Air-popped, unbuttered popcorn. It s crunchy and it s tasty and boosts your fiber intake. 2. Hummus. This is a chickpea spread that is loaded with fiber and makes a great topping for vegetables and pitas. 3. Lowfat yogurt. Get your share of calcium and protein, which can help keep your bones strong and healthy. 4. Peanut butter. Peanut butter serves up protein and Vitamin E, an antioxidant that may prevent oxidation of LDL, or bad cholesterol and boost your immune system. 5. Carrots and or red peppers. You will get vitamin A from carrots and beta-carotene from red peppers. 6. Oatmeal. Packed with fiber, this cholesterol lowering staple isn t just for breakfast. 7. Low-fat string cheese. The easy-to-carry snack offers calcium and protein. 8. Nuts. A handful provides protein, which helps keep you feeling fuller longer. 9. Fruits. Fruits take little or no preparation, so they re convenient while providing dietary fiber and host of vitamins and minerals.
