1 RULES 1. All vegetables, fruit, plants etc. must be the EXHIBITOR S own property and must have been in his/her possession for at least two months prior to the show or have been raised from seed by the EXHIBITOR. Exhibitors are required to make a declaration that the specimens shown by them comply with this rule. 2. All roots to be washed. Anyone violating this rule shall be disqualified from receiving any prize. 3. All exhibits must be shown and staged as directed by the Show Superintendent and ready for the Judges by 9.45am unless otherwise stated. The show room will be closed at this time and cleared of all persons not officially engaged by the Committee. 4. Should there be three entries or less in any one class prizes may be awarded at the Judge s discretion. Points to be counted according to award. The Judge s finding to be final. 5. An Exhibitor may enter only one exhibit in any one class. Novice (beginners) and intermediate classes are not open to exhibitors who have already won a prize in that particular class at any Show, or have held any novice or intermediate trophies. 6. The Committee reserves the right to inspect all Exhibitor s allotments and/or gardens after receipt of entries. 7. The Committee will take all ordinary care of exhibits and receptacles but will not be responsible for any loss or damage that may arise from any cause whatsoever. 8. All protests must be made to the Show Secretary in writing before 2.30 pm on the day of the show and must be accompanied by a fee of 1.00 which will be forfeit unless the protest is held to be valid. No protest will be held valid unless its basis is the infringement of the Rules or Conditions of this Schedule. 9. Entry fee for all classes is 25p. If entries are not staged entry fees will be forfeit unless the Show Secretary is notified more than 24 hours before the start of the show. 10. All vases, except in the SHOREHAM TOP VASE Class, will be provided by the Society. W1

2 11. All exhibits must remain untouched except with the Show Superintendent s express permission. Exhibits must not be removed until after the presentation of awards. Exhibits not then removed will be included in the Auction. 12. Exhibitors will be classed as professionals who obtain their livelihood wholly or mainly from horticulture or employ others for that purpose. 13. If there is a tie for any Trophy or Medal the Exhibitor with the most First Prizes will be adjudged the winner of the Trophy or Medal. 14. If necessary exhibits must be placed on either paper plates or foil dishes which will be provided by the Society. 3 16. A Collection is to occupy a space not more than 90 x 60 cm, the use of a tray is optional. 4 18. All trophies are to be held for one year and remain the property of the Society. Holders of awards are requested to return them in a clean condition to Brian Thomas, Show Superintendent, at least two weeks before the Show at which they are to be re-presented. Engraving of trophies is at the discretion of the winner and at their own expense. 19. CLASSIFICATION OF DAHLIAS Group 1 Single flowered Group 2 Anemone flowered Group 3 Collarette Group 4 Water lily flowered Group 5 Decorative Group 6 Ball Group 7 Pompon Group 8 Cactus Group 9 Semi-cactus Group 10 Miscellaneous Groups 4, 5, 8 and 9 are subdivided for show purposes as follows: Giant usually over 260 mm Large usually between 220 and 260 mm Medium usually between 170 and 220 mm Small usually between 115 and 170 mm Miniature up to 115 mm Group 7 Pompons must not exceed 52 mm in diameter. 20. DISQUALIFICATION OF DAHLIAS Exhibits will be disqualified for the following reasons: Blooms exceeding the maximum diameter. Blooms artificially supported above the top level of the vase. Incorrect number of blooms in an exhibit, including buds whether embryo or showing colour. All buds are treated as blooms and will result in disqualification if not removed over the correct number. Classified blooms exhibited in the wrong class. 21. The BEST EXHIBITS in the show will be chosen by all the judges from all exhibits and awarded the Red Rosette for best flowerpot plant exhibit and Green Rosette for best vegetable exhibits. W4

5 22. FLORAL ART CLASSES Only fresh flowers and foliage may be used unless otherwise stated. Accessories may be used. All classes except Open Table will be in alcoves approximately 60 cm wide. Flowers need not be grown by the exhibitor. Exhibits may be brought to the show already assembled. 23. HOMECRAFTS (COOKERY) All items, except jams, pickles and chutneys, must be completely covered with clear film. Jams and jellies must have a waxed disc and cellophane cover. Pickles and chutneys should have appropriate lids. Items not so covered will be disqualified. All jars must be labelled with contents and date of production. 24. All exhibitors to mark their entry cards R (reserved) if they wish to retain their exhibits. All exhibits not so marked will be deemed eligible for auction and the proceeds donated to the Society. 25. Staging times must be strictly adhered to. 26. 14 SHOREHAM TOP TRAY CLASS 48. Shoreham Top Tray Class is for a collection of three types of vegetables chosen from the following list. The quantity of each vegetable required for the collection is given in brackets: Carrots (3) Cauliflowers (2) Onions (3) Peas (6 pods) Potatoes (3) Runner Beans (6) Tomatoes (6) Each type of vegetable will be judged out of a total of 20 points. Judging is split into three sections as follows: For size, shape and colour 7 points For condition 7 points For uniformity 6 points The overall marks therefore will be out of a total of 60 points. All vegetables are to be arranged for effect and must be displayed within an area measuring 45 x 60 cm without bending any part of them. No part of any exhibit may exceed the size of the tray. A tray or board measuring 45 x 60 cm can be used to display the vegetables or the area can be marked on the staging. When tray has a lip or edge, it is the internal measurement that must not exceed 45 x 60 cm. Prize Money 1 st nd rd Notes for Exhibitors and Judges: Carrots must have foliage trimmed back to 7.5 cm. Peas and beans must be displayed with some stalk attached. Tomatoes must be displayed with the calyx intact. Judges may handle exhibits, open pods and so on, to check for quality. Judges should use their discretion when judging the Top Tray Class bearing in mind that the entries may not come from regular exhibitors. The points awarded should be clearly marked by the judges on the exhibitors cards. Any queries that may arise, regarding anything other than the above rules, should be referred to and decided by the show officials. Failure to abide by any of these rules will lead to disqualification. W14

20 SHOREHAM TOP VASE CLASS 110. The Top Vases class is for One Vase of Mixed Flowers containing between five and ten stems taken from a minimum of two different kinds of plants. Please note that it is two different KINDS of plant. Two varieties of the same plant are NOT two different kinds. The display will be judged out of a total of 35 points, split into two parts as follows: For colour, form, condition, quality and freshness of the flowers on display 25 points. For overall presentation and effect of the flowers in the vase 10 points. The vase will be viewed from all directions. Judging of the flowers will be by normal RHS rules. Plants used in the display must show flowers only, no seed heads or berries are allowed and flowers must have been grown by the exhibitor. The vase can be any shape or size and made from any material, but must be in proportion to the display. No marks are awarded for the vase itself. No accessories whatsoever (such as bows and additional foliage) will be allowed. Foliage which is growing naturally from the flowering stems, and still attached to the stems, will be allowed. Packing material including florist s foam, to keep the stems upright and in place, is allowed but must not appear above the rim of the vase. Prize Money 1 st nd rd Notes for Exhibitors and Judges: A vase, by definition, is any vessel that can be used to hold cut flowers and which is taller than it is wide at its widest point. The Top Vase class is open for anyone to enter and is not intended purely for growers who regularly display single species classes at shows. Judges should use their discretion when judging the Top Vase class, bearing in mind that the entries may not come from regular exhibitors. Judges should note that the display has to be viewed from all sides. The points awarded should be clearly marked by the judges on the exhibitors cards. Any questions that may arise, regarding anything other than the above rules, should be referred to and decided by the show officials. 28 RECIPE Summer Show Marmalade Cake Class 122 Ingredients 9oz/250g Self Raising Flour 4.5oz/125g Margarine 4.5oz/125g Caster Sugar 2 Large eggs 4.5oz/125g Marmalade 2tbsp Milk (approx.) Grease and line a 7 /18cm cake tin. Cream margarine and sugar, add the marmalade and mix together. Beat the eggs and milk together and stir into the mixture, gently fold in the flour. Turn into the prepared tin and bake for 1 hour (approx.) at 160 o C, Gas Mark 3 or 320 o F until well risen. Cover with paper and bake for a further 10 minutes. Turn onto a wire rack to cool. W28
