3 STEEP FLOWER SHOW 2018 Affiliated to the Hampshire Federation of Horticultural Societies HINTS FOR NEW EXHIBITORS Read the schedule carefully. Check that you have placed on the show table the correct number of specimens for each exhibit; incorrect numbers will mean disqualification. All cultivars should be named if possible. Couples may make joint entries except for men only classes, where a separate entry form is required. Committee members will be pleased to answer questions if you have any problems. VEGETABLES Beans: Dwarf and runner, should be straight and should snap without string and have at least 1/4 of stalk. Carrots, parsnips and beet: Remove leaves and tie stalks with raffia. Courgettes should be mm long, or approximately 75mm in diameter for round cultivars, flowers adhering if possible. Culinary herbs should not be in flower. Leeks should be tied or plaited. Marrows should be young. Long cultivars should be less than 380mm and round cultivars less than 500mm in circumference. Potatoes should be of good shape, uniform and free from blemishes. Shallots and onions should have clean skins and tops tied off with raffia. Onions should be standing vertically on rings. Sweetcorn should have fresh green husks with silks attached. Pull down one or two husks to expose grain. Tomatoes: Round varieties should be in the region of 55-65mm in diameter. They should be shown with the calyx attached and be evenly matched for size, shape and colour. They should not be overripe but be firm, not showing greenback. They should ideally be displayed on a stand in a single row; alternatively set them in sand. Collection of vegetables: Four different kinds are required; you may not exhibit two varieties of the same kind (e.g. two varieties of potato). Collection of salad vegetables: See RHS handbook for guidance. FRUIT All fruit, with the exception of peaches and nectarines, should be shown with the stalk attached and with the natural bloom. Do not polish, and handle as little as possible. Use the stalk for handling, not the fruit itself. Soft fruit should have the calyx attached. Apples should be displayed with the eye uppermost. Apples and pears need not be ripe.

4 FLOWERS All cut flowers should be in an appropriate vase. We recommend that they are cut the evening before and allowed to take up water. Choose flowers of uniform size and arrange in vases. Ensure water is in all containers. Where the schedule calls for a specific number of blooms, be aware that a bud counts as a bloom. Edible flowers: a list is available at other sites come up if you Google. Pansies and fuchsias: stands to display flower heads will be provided on show day. DOMESTIC Baking should be on a china plate inside a large resealable polythene bag. All jams, preserves and drinks should be labelled and fully dated with day, month and year. Jars should not have a manufacturer s name or logo. Jam: Use new tops for jars, and fill to the brim to prevent mould developing. Use either a wax disc and cellophane top or a new twist top, not both. Lemon curd should have a wax disc and a cellophane top. Chutney should be mature, at least 2 months. It should have a twist top, and if it contains chillies it should be labelled hot. Eggs should be uniform in size and colour and very fresh. CHILDREN S pictures should be mounted if possible This year there will again be a produce stall, the ideal way to use up all the extras you had to pick to get those perfect specimens for the show bench. Please bring along your surplus vegetables, fruit, cut flowers, jams, baking, etc., between 7.30am and 9.15am on show day.

10 RULES 1. The show will be conducted in accordance with the Rules and Standards contained in the Royal Horticultural Society s Horticultural Show Handbook (8 th edition, 2016) and the Women s Institute publication On With the Show, (both as adapted) 2. The committee reserves the right to refuse any entry. 3. Any prize may be held or modified if there are insufficient entries of the standard required. 4. The committee reserves the right to inspect the garden of any exhibitor. 5. All entries in produce classes must be grown by the exhibitor; Flower Arranging Classes may use material not grown by the exhibitor. 6. Entry forms and fees should be sent or given to Jane Owen, The Vicarage, 77 Church Road, Steep, GU32 2DF ( ) by Wednesday 22 nd August Double fees will be payable for entries submitted on Thursday. No entries will be accepted on Friday or Saturday. (It would greatly help the organisers if you deliver your entries as early as possible) 7. All exhibits will be received from 7.30am. Exhibitors must leave the tent by 9.15am. No exhibit may be removed until after the start of the prize giving. No exhibitor will be allowed in the marquee during judging except committee members, stewards and other officials. 8. No members may make more than one entry in any one class. Families may not submit multiple entries in produce classes. 9. Children s entries must be the child s unaided work. Please make sure exhibits are staged in the correct age group, under 8 or The show committee cannot guarantee the safety of exhibits or other property of exhibitors. 11.
