Their new location is 1837 Bourbon Rd., Cross Plains, WI THANK YOU Director: Lynn Forshaug Case Manager: Jane Frame Nutrition Site Manager: Adam Pollock To everyone who volunteered their time, donated items, and patronized our garage and bake sale. It was a great success! To everyone who has donated items from our wish list. To Shamrock Farms for sponsoring April Bingo. The Senior Center accepts cash and material donations for use with our programs. We can provide you with a receipt if needed for tax purposes.
2 DIRECTOR S NOTE: LYNN FORSHAUG June has arrived with many flowers and trees blooming, baseball and picnics and vacations starting. June has lots of events to celebrate; Dairy Month, Flag Day, and Father s Day and the official start of Summer are on June 21st. Have a wonderful and safe summer everyone, because it will surely go fast! CASE MANAGER S NOTE: JANE FRAME Senior Bullying: Are you the bully or being bullied? Bullying is defined as intentional, repetitive, aggressive behavior involving an imbalance of power or strength. Each of us have differences in Skills, Knowledge, Age, Gender, Sexual Orientation, Abilities/Disabilities, Literacy, Income, Ethnicity, Religion and other factors. What Does It Look Like? It is name calling, teasing, hurling insults, sarcastic remarks, pointed jokes, bossing around, loudly arguing, being manipulative, rumors, exclusion/cliques, saved seating, gossiping/whispering and monopolizing activities. Do you know anyone who does these things or maybe you yourself have been guilty of doing these things to others? Causes of Bullying in Seniors: Loss of independence, relationships, income, and health may contribute to Senior Bullying. Seniors may be seeking control at a time in life when they feel exceptionally vulnerable. Inexperience with communal living or activities with people that may not be like themselves. As a Community, let us try to honor and respect each others differences. NUTRITION SITE MANAGER S NOTE: ADAM POLLOCK I would like to thank everyone for making our restaurant day at Finks an early success. I ve been talking to a lot of our customers and they are not aware the we serve meals at the community center the other days of the week. Some of our more popular meals including roast beef with gravy, three cheese lasagna and roast pork and gravy are being served this month. Bring a friend and check out what we ve got going on at the community center. NUTRITION NOOK: BEETS These root vegetables are packed with energy-boosting, heart healthy nutrients. They contain folate, vitamins C and K, fiber and iron. They can help reduce inflammation and keep your liver healthy. Beets aren t that much higher in sugar than other vegetables; a single serving contains about 8 gr. of sugar, about the amount of one large carrot. Red beets are high in antioxidants and yellow beets are rich in lutein, which is crucial to eye health. Beets are also high in nitrates (not nitrites which are not good for you), which help in expanding blood vessels and help lower blood pressure. Beets can be baked, boiled, juiced or grated. SAVE MONEY AND REDUCE YOUR STRESS Would an extra $ in the bank each month help? Is it hard to make your Social Security check stretch enough to buy groceries, medications, pay the electric bill, insurance, rent and phone bill? Do you worry about affording your bills? The Medicare Savings Program can help! The Medicare Savings Programs are designed to help people with limited finances. People who are enrolled in Medicare B, have money taken out of your Social Security check each month. This could be paid for you. You would continue to receive the same Medicare benefits, see the same doctor, use the same Medicare card and get the same services. The only difference is that you would have extra money in the bank each month! To qualify for the Medicare Savings Program, you need to meet income and asset guidelines. If you are single, your income has to be less than $1,324.00/month and assets below $7, For a couple, your income must be less than $1,792.00/month, with assets below $10, As a bonus, if you qualify for a Medicare Savings Program, you can also get a reduced premium and lower deductible and co-pays for a Medicare Part D prescriptions. If your income is close to these limits, call the Mt. Horeb Senior Center for more information on how to save some money.
