2 Director s Corner As I write, the first full day of Fall is here! Jeezum Crow!!! It was 90 degrees yesterday, but just a few short weeks ago I had my fleece jacket on every morning. Some of our trips did not sell out but the one where no one knows where they are going did again this year!! We have our Mystery Trip on the 12 th of this month and our final trip will be on November 7 th to a show in Holyoke Mass. And on October 5 th we will have our last night opening, our annual Oktoberfest celebration As we head into October we also will be doing our Annual Appeal for general support of our programs. Contributions to Bugbee are tax deductible, so if you are thinking about your 2017 taxes and charitable giving provides you with some tax relief, please consider giving to our center. As hard as it seems to be thinking about Christmas, we have started to receive donations for our annual Holiday Bazaar in December. As you look around and especially if you have thought about downsizing, please do remember that those unwanted things may be a big help to us as we prepare for our Bazaar. Like our Annual Appeal, the bazaar is an important fundraising activity to support our center. On another note, we are currently working on proposals to do some much needed facility repairs, which we will advance to our Town Manager. For those of you who do not know, the Town of Hartford owns the building we use. The building opened in 1980 and while it has served our needs well for that time, it simply requires some upgrades to keep it as the functional space for our programs and activities. Some of these needs include upgrades to our heating/cooling system, replacement of inefficient and poorly operating kitchen stoves and roof replacement. Other less significant upgrades are being considered, all with an eye to keeping Bugbee a comfortable place to come and enjoy meals and activities. I will keep you posted as these conversations continue along in the town budget cycle. And finally we look forward to seeing you here, now that the weather is turning. Come down and enjoy our programs, including Tai Chi, cribbage, fitness, Bingo, book clubs, poetry, meals, and of course me!! Aw shucks, just come in and see for yourself! Len Brown It s That Time Again! It s not too soon to start thinking about our Christmas Bazaar. If you have items that you no longer want, we hope that you will keep us in mind if you have: Clean, gently used items in good condition that someone might find appealing in our White Elephant department. (No clothing or electronics, please) New or like new items that are suitable for gift-giving for our Boutique. Jewelry and accessories in good condition for our Jewelry department. Handmade items are always welcome. If you are making pickles, jam or jelly, we d love to have a jar or two. After Thanksgiving, we ll call some folks to get contributions for our Bazaar food sale (bread, pies, bar cookies, baked beans, candy, fudge, etc.) and our annual Cookie Walk. The Bazaar will start on Saturday, Dec. 2rd and continue (Mon-Fri, 9-3, unless we sell out) until the Cookie Walk on Saturday, Dec. 16th. 3rd Annual Holiday Raffle We will be having our 3rd annual raffle with daily prizes in the month of December and, once again, we would really appreciate folks taking tickets to sell on our behalf, starting in November. The calendar will be published in the November Bugbee Bulletin and tickets will be available at the Center as of November 1st. As before, tickets are $10 each and are eligible to win each day of the raffle.

Back in May, Paul and Denise Dellamano introduced us to Hand and Foot, a card game very similar to Canasta. There have been regular tournaments on Thursday afternoons ever since. Unfortunately for us, Paul and Denise have purchased a new home in the lakes region of NH so they are no longer available, but their legacy lives on. Hand and Foot players will still gather on the Center at 1:00 on Thursdays (except the 3rd Thursday when we will show a movie in Bugbee Cinema). No registration, no cost (so there will no longer be cash prizes) just come in. In addition, other games are available for folks who would like to come play: Scrabble, Dominos, Cribbage, Chinese Checkers, Chess, Yahtzee, to name a few. Bring a partner or come solo and find a partner here. We re just going to see how this evolves on its own Have You Played The Marble Game? Several times each year, the Bugbee Senior Center conducts a fund-raiser called The Marble Game daily after the noon meal. Raffle tickets are sold daily (3/$1) and are valid only on the day of purchase. Half of the money raised goes directly to Bugbee Senior Center; the remainder goes in to the pot. We start with 95 clear marbles, 5 red marbles, 1 pink marble, 1 mottled marble and 1 dark blue marble. After lunch, three tickets are drawn and each winning ticket holder gets to pick a marble from the can. Clear= no prize; Pink = pick another marble; Mottled = gift card; Dark blue = 1 Bugbee Buck; Red = Wins the pot. If more than one red marble is picked, the pot is divided among the winners. If no red marbles are picked, the money in the pot rolls over to the next day. As the number of marbles decrease, the odds of winning increase and the pot grows. Play continues until all red marbles have been picked. The next round of The Marble Game will start on Monday, October 2nd.
6 Armchair Travel Series Have you ever wanted to travel the world with your own personal travel guide? While we can t offer that, we will be offering the next-best thing. Starting on October 25th, we plan to take you on a half-hour video tour once a month. If you watch PBS, you may be familiar with Rick Steves and his wonderful off-the-beatentrack European tours. Each month we will pick a different video to show after lunch, staring with Assisi and Italian Country Charm. If you have a favorite destination, let us know and we will try to accommodate your request. Sign Up Now For Computer Assistance Once again, the Bugbee Senior Center is partnering with the Hartford Area Career & Technology Center (HACTC) to provide one-on-one computer and cell phone assistance to seniors. The student instructors are all seniors in Computer Technology Applications. The HACTC students are available on Wednesday and Thursday mornings only, with appointment slots at 9:00. If you have your own laptop or tablet, bring it with you. We will ask you to fill out a brief questionnaire so the students will know what you want to learn. To make an appointment for two sessions (usually scheduled one week apart so you will have time to practice what you have learned), call Regina at between 8:30 and 2:30, Mon. through Thurs. National Fire Prevention Week October 8 14, 2017 Since 1922, the week that includes Oct. 9th has been proclaimed to be National Fire Prevention Week, in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire of That fire began on October 8th, but most of the damage was done the next day. Over 250 people lost their lives in that fire; 100,000 were left homeless and over 17,400 structures were destroyed. Interestingly, the largest forest fire in American history also started on Oct. 8, 1871, in northeast Wisconsin, but it received little notice beyond its region because of the Chicago fire. During National Fire Prevention Week, many fire departments host activities to increase awareness of home safety issues, especially the use of smoke detectors. If you have smoke detectors, this is a good time to make sure that they are working properly. The recommendation is that smoke detectors be replaced every ten years, and batteries should be replaced every six months. The age of a smoke detector can be determined by the date of manufacture on the back or side of the alarm. If you do not have smoke detectors, get them. There should be at least one smoke detector on each level of your home. They can save your life, but only if they are working. 7 Flu Facts Flu vaccination is an important preventative tool to reduce the risk of flu-associated symptoms among older adults and people with chronic health conditions. Flu vaccination should begin soon after vaccine becomes available, by the end of October, if possible. While seasonal influenza outbreaks can happen as early as October, during most seasons influenza activity peaks in between December and February. - It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body that protect against influenza virus infection - It is best that people get vaccinated so they are protected before influenza begins spreading in their community. - There is some evidence that immunity may decline more quickly in older people. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends a yearly flu vaccine for just about everyone 6 months and older, even when the viruses the vaccine protects against have not changed from the previous season. The reason for this is that a person's immune protection from vaccination declines over time, so an annual vaccination is needed to get the optimal (best) protection against the flu. For older adults, two vaccine options are available. One is the standard dose and the other is the high-dose vaccine, which is designed specifically for people 65 and older. This vaccine contains a higher dose of antigen (the part of the vaccine that prompts the body to make antibody), which is intended to create a stronger immune response in this age group. Speak with your care provider to find out which dose he/she recommends that you receive. Adapted from: CDC website At VNH flu clinics the standard dose of influenza vaccine is given. The rule of thumb is that immunization lasts for 6 months in adults. Vaccine given in Provides immunity through Late September Late March October April Early November Early May Stop Germs! Stay Healthy! Wash Your Hands! (U. S. Department of Health & Human Services; Centers for Disease Control & Prevention) Keeping hands clean is one of the most important things we can do to stop the spread of germs and stay healthy. WHEN? Before, during and after preparing food Before eating food Before and after caring for someone who is sick Before and after treating a cut or wound After using the toilet After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet After blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing After handling pet food or pet treats After touching garbage HOW? Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap and apply soap. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your nails. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the Happy Birthday song from beginning to end twice. Rinse hands well under clean, running water. Dry hands using a clean towel or air dry them. Medicare Open Enrollment Due to circumstances beyond our control, the presentation by Patricia Coogan, State Health Insurance Program volunteer, scheduled for Oct. 10th,has been cancelled. However, help is still available by appointment with Eleanor Zue at the Center or by calling the Senior Helpline ( The open enrollment period, October 15 December 7, 2017, is when you should review your current Medicare plan, explore your options and choose the plan that suits your needs best. For most Medicare beneficiaries, this is the only time to change plans.
