2 Directors Corner Go figure! After the storms of March we have weather like July and then days like April in April! But as I write the plants around the building are sprouting and I cut a daffy-dill for my breast pocket. The snow piles are gradually going out so I think we made it through another winter and I hope I didn t jinx us. On May 6 th the Town Tree Board will have their annual sale in the Hartford Town Hall parking lot. Two weeks later there will be a clothing swap here (May 20&21). Both these activities have a block ad elsewhere in this edition. We had our first night opening on April 19th to recognize our volunteers. Our thanks go out to our volunteers from all of us here at Bugbee, to all of you who help us out whether you were able to attend the dinner or not. We could not do what we do without you! We had a very nice evening punctuated by some wonderful door prizes and some nice dinner music provided by Carol Nettleship of West Lebanon. Trip season is upon us and things are filling up. If you want in do call soon or you will miss out. We are thinking about adding one more trip to our plans and if we do it will be a mystery, as in we will tell you when you are on the bus. Now that the better weather is upon us more folks are regularly coming in for our noon meal. Give it a try if you have not been here for lunch. Also, as we head into summer keep an eye out on our calendar for more night openings. We are working on plans for some nice evening dinners and some BINGO right through to the end of September or early October. Finally, on May 17th we will have our second night opening of this year to celebrate Older Americans Month. Instead of entertainment we will have our usual evening high stakes BINGO, as has been requested. This will be a sign up dinner so be attentive to that if you wish to come. The good weather is here, so come on down and enjoy a meal and some good company. Len Brown Executive Director Feeling Tense? How about a Chair Massage? A chair massage is a short massage that focuses on high-tension areas in the back, neck and shoulders. It is performed while you are seated in a specially-designed chair, facing forward, with your face in the face rest. (see picture). You remain fully clothed. In April, we held our first Chair Massage in cooperation with Cioffredi & Associates, which was very well-received. We are offering another session on Tues., May 23rd, by appointment, if 12 people sign up, so if you are interested, please sign up right away. The non-refundable $10 fee (for a 10 minute massage) is due at sign-up. Volunteers Needed We desperately need volunteer wait staff to help out in our dining room, both on a regular basis and as substitutes. There is no order-taking involved; no heavy trays to carry. Wait staff generally come in around 11:30 and are usually finished before 1:00. They pour beverages, serve salads, entrees and desserts. They clear away dishes between courses and at the end of the meal and wipe the tables. Steady hands, a bit of energy and a friendly smile are the main requirements for the job. If you can help us out, please call Regina at Just For Laughs When a customer left his cell phone in my store, I scrolled through his saved numbers, stopped at "Mom" and pushed send. His mother answered, and I told her what happened. "Don't worry," she said, "I'll take care of it." A few minutes later, the cell phone rang. It was "Mom." "Martin," she said, "you left your cell phone at the convenience store."

Whether you have companion animals or you re simply an animal lover, don t miss UVDART s presentation. Representatives will give an overview of (1) who they are, (2) how they work alongside the American Red Cross during a disaster, (3) why they need more trained volunteers and (4) how you can prepare to weather a disaster with your companion animals. May 26 12:30 Springfield Songsters. This travelling troupe from Springfield (VT) Senior Center will entertain after lunch. Because of this program, both Bingo and Shopping will be delayed one half-hour. Hand & Foot Card Games Do you enjoy card games? We re betting there are a bunch of people who read the bulletin who would like to come to the Center to play Hand & Foot on Thursday afternoons, starting May 4th. Don t know how to play? No problem, Denise and Paul Dellamano will be happy to teach you. Hand & Foot is very similar to Canasta. Each person is dealt a hand, which is played first, and a foot, which is played after the hand has been played. The object is to be the first to play all of your cards. There is a $2 charge to play. 50% of the money collected goes to support the Bugbee Senior Center. The rest of the money collected goes into a pot. Each player s name will be entered into a drawing so one lucky person will go home with the pot.

6 For years we have been reassuring people that if they receive a call from someone claiming to be calling from the IRS, it was a scam because the IRS doesn t operate that way. Now that is changing, according to AARP s Fraud Network. IRS Announces Use of Private Debt Collectors The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is now working with private debt collection agencies to recover unpaid tax debts. Scammers could attempt to capitalize on potential confusion created by this new development. Here s what you need to know: How it Works: If you have a long overdue federal tax account, IRS will mail you a letter informing you that it is turning over your account to a private debt collection agency. The letter will provide the name of the company and contact information. The private debt collector will then send you a letter confirming the account transfer before contacting you by phone. The debt collector will be able to discuss payment options with you but the only way you can pay your tax debt is electronically or by check, payable to the US Treasury. What You Should Know: The IRS authorized only four private debt collection agencies to collect tax debt, and only one of them will contact you if you owe federal taxes. The agencies are CBE Group of Cedar Falls, IA; Conserve of Fairport, NY; Performant of Livermore, CA; and Pioneer of Horseheads, NY. What You Should Do: Remain vigilant to the IRS imposter scam. If you do not have federal tax debt, you will not get a call from the IRS or a legitimate collection agency demanding payment. If you are unsure if you owe federal taxes, look up your account at When it comes to fraud, vigilance is our number one weapon. You have the power to protect yourselves and your loved ones from scams. Please share this alert with family and friends. Protect Yourself And Your Pets! This year seems to be shaping us as a very good one for ticks and a bad one for people and pets. Tick-borne diseases are passed to humans by the bite of infected ticks. Lyme disease is the most commonly reported tick-borne disease in the United States, with more than 22,500 confirmed cases and 7,500 probable cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in There are several other tick-borne diseases which are on the rise. All of them can be very serious, even lifethreatening. The first step in protection is to be aware that ticks are most active in the spring, summer and fall and can be found almost anywhere, especially where there are woods, bushes, high grass and leaf litter. Wear light colored clothing which cover your arms and legs when working outdoors or hiking. Carefully check yourself for ticks. There are many commercial products that repel ticks, especially those that contain DEET. If you prefer a non-chemical prevention, here s one to try: For People: In a spray bottle, mix 2 cups of distilled white vinegar and 1 cup of water. If you find the vinegar odor unpleasant, add 20 drops of your favorite essential oil. Eucalyptus oil is a calm, soothing scent that also works as a tick repellent, while peppermint and citrus oils give off a strong, crisp scent that also repels ticks. After mixing the solution, spray onto clothing, skin and hair before going outdoors. Reapply every four hours to keep ticks at bay, and examine your skin and hair when back inside to make sure no ticks are on your body. For Pets: In a spray bottle, mix 2 cups of distilled white vinegar, 1 cup of water, and two spoonsful of vegetable or almond oil (which contain sulfur, a natural tick repellent). To also deter fleas, mix in a few spoonsful of lemon juice, citrus oil or peppermint oil. Spray onto the pet s dry coat, staying away from sensitive areas (eyes, nose, mouth and genitals). When outdoor for an extended period, spray this solution on two to three times a day.
