1 Volume 2018 Issue 2 Published monthly by White River Council on Aging 262 N Main St., White River Jct., VT (802) November 2017 Bugbee Cinema Because November and December are such busy months, we are closing the Bugbee Cinema until January. Bazaar Time is Almost Here! Please keep us in mind if you have: Clean, gently used items in good condition that someone might find appealing in our White Elephant department. (No clothing, shoes, books or electronics, please) New or like new items that are suitable for gift-giving for our Boutique. Gently-used Jewelry and accessories for our Jewelry department. Bake Sale perishable items should be brought in on Friday, Dec. 1st before 3:30. 2 Director s Corner It certainly is hard to believe we are approaching the holiday season, but folks are beginning to bring in items for our Annual Holiday Bazaar. If you have items to donate now is the time. If you have an item and are not sure if it is appropriate for one of our Departments feel free to call us and we will let you know for sure. Our Bazaar will be on Saturday December 2nd. Then Saturday, the 16th, our Cookie Walk will occur. Mark those two dates on your calendar as we usually have some very good items for your consideration. As in years past, we will be having two special Holiday dinners which folks need to sign up for in order to reserve a seat. These dinners ALWAYS sell out so don t wait for the last minute if you want to join us. The Thanksgiving Dinner will be on Thursday November 16 th and the Christmas Dinner will be Wednesday, the 13 th of December. We will also have a breakfast on December 22nd but there will be more detail on that in the December Newsletter. And, as we head into the holiday season there will be the usual entertainment that comes with the season. Our Annual Appeal letter is going out a bit later than in prior years. This annual fundraiser is an important activity to provide us with the financial support we need to keep our programs in place for the ensuing year. Once again, the Jack and Dorothy Byrne Foundation have agreed to match donations up to $25,000. This is a great opportunity to double your donation. And, we are a registered 501(c) (3) not for profit corporation, making your donation tax deductible. As we enter the final months of this calendar year, and folks begin thinking about filing income tax returns, I hope you will consider helping us financially as well as helping your own tax situation. As the weather changes and there is less favorable outdoor time available, our participation in activities has been picking up. Our Friday morning Tai Chi has become so filled I am not sure where we will put new people if they arrive, but we will figure that out if need be. Other activities are seeing increased enrollment. So, don t stay home watching boring TV, like reruns of Mork and Mindy, or Perry Mason. You ve seen em a million times already..come on down and have some fun! Len Brown.Upper Valley Clothing Swap presents the Annual Fall & Winter Clothing Swap & Food Drive Saturday, Nov. 11 & Sunday, Nov. 12, to 2 Saturday, Nov 11: Come to Bugbee Senior Center between 10 am and 2 pm with your donations of fall and winter clothing. Items should be clean and in good condition. (No rips or tears, missing buttons or broken zippers, please. If you would offer it to a friend, it is suitable to swap.) Volunteers will sort, fold and arrange the donated clothing. If you can t come on Saturday, donations can be dropped during the previous week (October 31 November 4) at the Upper Valley Co-Op across the street (193 North Main St., WRJ) Sunday, Nov.12: Come to Bugbee Senior Center between 10 am and 2 pm to find some fine new-to-you seasonal clothing for your whole family, just in time for the coming cold weather. Bring your friends. Every thing is FREE. You do not need to donate to pick things up. Accepting non-perishable FOOD donations for the Upper Valley Haven on Nov.11th and 12th. We are in dire need of volunteers to serve as wait staff in our dining room! There is no order taking or carrying of heavy trays. Wait staff arrive around 11:30 AM to deliver water pitchers, bread baskets, butter and other condiments to the tables, and pour beverages before serving salads and the main course. Meals are plated in the kitchen and carried to the tables by wait staff. Wait staff clear the dishes between courses and after the meal, then wipe off the tables. Lunch is usually over no later than 12:45. Most wait staff volunteers serve one or two days a week, depending on their desire and availability. If you are interested in volunteering or in finding out more about it, call Regina at , Mon-Thurs between 8 am and 3 pm, or stop in at the Center. After many years as our Senior Fitness Instructor, Laura Dykstra has taken a new position which does not allow her to continue with us. We appreciate her faithfulness here over the years and wish her the very best in her new endeavors.

6 Annual Holiday Raffle! Starting December 1st, we will give away a prize every weekday in December. One ticket ($10) buys one chance for each prize. Winning tickets go back in the bowl and remain eligible for each drawing through Dec. 31st. Tickets will be available at the Center starting November 1st. All proceeds benefit Bugbee Senior Center. 7 WE BELIEVE THAT HUNGER DOESN T TAKE A VACATION Put more healthy food on your table with 3SquaresVT, formerly known as food stamps. Tens of thousands of Vermonters rely on 3SquaresVT every month to help them afford groceries to feed their families. Thanks to this program more Vermonters are able to buy healthy food. A family of two earning up to $2505 a month may be able to get benefits. Those that qualify for the VT earned Income Tax Credit are automatically eligible for 3SquaresVT. Households can have a savings account or an asset like a car or home and still qualify. These added benefits mean more of your money is freed up to pay other bills and results in less stress in your life. Over 700 Vermont grocery stores and farmers markets accept 3SquareVT to pay for food. For older Vermonters, good nutrition is also very important. It helps you stay active and helps prevent sickness. The high cost of food, fuel and health care are making it hard for many seniors to put good food on the table. Older Vermonters who take part are not taking money away from others in need, there is enough for everyone. 3SquaresVT comes either on an EBT, debit card or as cash directly deposited into your bank account. As an elder, you ve no doubt worked hard all your life and you have earned the help you can get now. SEVCA s Family Services staff is available to assist households to apply for 3SquaresVT. To schedule an appointment, please call and you will be directed to a Family Service staff person in your area. You may also visit for more information or you can apply online. 1 in 8 Vermonters get 3SquaresVT, have you applied yet? Moving? Going on vacation? If you will be moving or away long enough to discontinue mail service, please let us know. If the Post Office returns your Bugbee Bulletin to us, we are charged 49. A quick phone call from you will mean a lot to us. And be sure to let us know when you return so we can update our mailing list accordingly. If you would like to keep up with news here at the Center, we ll be happy to send the Bugbee Bulletin to your winter address or, preferably, send it to you via . Winter Weather Closing Policy During the next few months, there may be days when the weather conditions make it unsafe for our staff, volunteers and participants to be out on the roads. Our policy is that when the Hartford School District schools are closed due to weather conditions, the Bugbee Senior Center is also closed. Please watch your TV or listen to the radio for announcements. When the Center is closed, there are no home-delivered meals. Meal recipients will receive an extra frozen meal to be used when the Center is unexpectedly closed. Crisis Fuel Assistance In Vermont Crisis Fuel Assistance can help you with a heating crisis during the winter months, if you are income-eligible and experiencing a crisis (e.g., you are out of fuel or very close to running out of fuel and have no money to buy more). If you are eligible, Crisis Fuel Assistance may help you to Purchase the primary source of your heat (e.g., electricity, kerosene, natural gas, oil, propane or wood); Purchase electricity if it s required to run your heating system; Have your furnace repaired or replaced; Negotiate payment plans; and Work with your electric or natural gas company to prevent disconnection. You can apply for Crisis Fuel Assistance starting the last Monday in November. Do not wait until you have run out of fuel to apply. They can not help you if the fuel has already been delivered or the furnace work has been completed. You must apply in person at your local Community Action Agency. For our area, that s SEVCA 220 Holiday Dr,. WRJ. If you are elderly or disabled and can t apply in person, they may accept your application over the phone:
