1 Volume 2019 Issue 6 Published monthly by White River Council on Aging 262 N Main St., White River Jct., VT (802) Join Us for St. Patrick s Day Lunch Monday, March 18 12:00 Sign Up Required March 2019 Ride the Bus With Us! ADVANCE TRANSIT TRAVEL TRAINING Many thanks to the Hartford Emblem Club for their recent donation to the Bugbee Senior Center! TUESDAY, MARCH 19 9:30 MEET AT BUGBEE TO GO OVER PROCEDURES 10:15 BUS TOUR 11:15 RETURN TO BUGBEE Sign Up Required Thought for the Month If you choose not to find joy in the snow, you will have less joy in your life, but the same amount of snow. Emily s Retirement Party Sunday. March PM Thyme Restaurant in WRJ. (Just down the hill in the Tip Top building) Limited to 75, so sign up now! Cash bar for alcoholic beverages; coffee, tea and soft drinks and other refreshments provided. Please do come wish her well, even though she will still be at the Center for a few more days. (No gifts, please.)

2 Emily s Corner Len has graciously ceded his space to me this month as I am officially retiring at the end of March. A year ago, I declared my intention to retire as of March 29, 2019, mainly to give myself time to get used to the idea. My goodness, how this year has flown! When I took this job in December 1988, I was looking for a year-round job that did not require me to work evenings or weekends. At the time, I had teenagers at home and I was wearing many volunteer hats for the Girl Scouts. I was marginally familiar with the Bugbee Senior Center because my Dad (Chet Dodge) rode shotgun on the van every day. I never expected that I would still be working here 30 years later! From my very first day on the job, life at Bugbee Senior Center has been a learning experience! The first thing I learned was that life can t be defined by age. Grace Emery from Quechee was over 90 and came in every single morning to set the tables! Having just turned 40 (and having just found my first gray hair!), I found that incredibly reassuring. I learned that people can t be defined by demographics. We learn and grow as we age, but we retain the essences of our personalities which is why our dining room shares some of the characteristics of an 8th-Grade cafeteria. And I mean that in the nicest way possible! It s where friends gather for food, conversation and occasional giggles (but no food fights!). I learned the value of volunteers. I thought I already knew that. After all, I was /am a Girl Scout. But at Bugee, we could not operate without our volunteers. Folks in the community would not get homedelivered meals. We could not serve meals in our dining room in any sort of timely manner. There would be no way to put on the Bazaar to raise much needed funds. My heartfelt thanks to each and every one of our volunteers, past and present. While I won t be coming in to volunteer right away, I m sure I will be back. Many folks have asked me what I plan to do when I retire. I have a once-in-a-lifetime family trip to Cozumel, Mexico, planned for June, but, for the most part, I will just be spending time at home in Wilder, working on my flower gardens and downsizing in place. I m by no means a hoarder, but I have my share of stuff that has accumulated over the years that I no longer need or want. I want to deal with all of that while I have the energy to do it so that, ultimately, my kids won t have to. Oh, and I ve already signed up for three of the Bugbee Senior Center trips this summer! I know I will miss all of the wonderful folks at the Center but I wanted to leave when we could make the transition as easy as possible. As I write this, we seem to be in the final stages of hiring a new girl at the front desk (as I was referred to for years). I hope that the next person to sit in this chair will love the job as much as I have. We are planning to have our new staff member here before I actually leave, so do stop by the desk and say hello. Emily Santaw Help Needed: Home-Delivered Meal Drivers We need drivers for our meal routes in Quechee and White River Jct. Meals are picked up at the Center around 10:45 AM, Monday through Friday. The number of meals/stops varies by route and day. Before going solo on a route, new drivers go out once or twice with an experienced driver. All drivers must pass a criminal background check. Wait Staff: There is no order taking or carrying of heavy trays. Wait staff arrive around 11:30 AM to distribute water pitchers, bread baskets, etc., to the tables, and pour coffee, tea or milk before serving salads and the main course. Meals are plated in the kitchen and carried to the tables by wait staff. Wait staff clear the dishes between courses and after the meal, then wipe off the tables. Lunch is usually over no later than 12:45. Most wait staff volunteers serve one or two days a week. If you are interested in volunteering or in finding out more about volunteering, call Regina at (802) , Mon-Thurs between 8 am and 3 pm, or stop in at the Center.
