1 Home Journal May 11th, 2018 Hello, Everyone.. Thank you, Chuck, for all of the planning and hard work you are putting into the construction of our new bocce ball court. It is really beginning to take shape and we look forward to putting to use. Next on the list, the putting green! Our complimentary pancake breakfast will be offered on Thursday, May 17 th at 9am. Please join us and enjoy a made-from-scratch breakfast with friends and neighbors. I want to caution everyone from attempting to physically assist others when they ve lost their balance and fallen to the floor. Helping in this way may inadvertently cause injury to yourself or to the individual you are trying to assist. Our protocol is to illicit the expertise of EMS so that the person can be assessed for injuries. My hat is off to Vicki for putting together a fun-filled Kentucky Derby/Cinco de Mayo party last Saturday. I received lots of positive feedback on the event and it is always a pleasure to know that folks have congregated to kick back and enjoy life! Work began on the construction of the new duplexes Wednesday. It is exciting to see all of the planning and coordination come to fruition. At this time, we are anticipating that our future residents and neighbors will be moving into their new homes throughout the months of October through December. I want to wish all of our Mothers a terrific Mother s Day! I hope your day is relaxing, rewarding, and full of great reflections on the life you have given us. ~ Kevin Colleen is on call May 14th Our Lake Forest Website ForestSeniorCommunity

3 Our Lake Forest Residents News, Comments, Etc... The current curio cabinet display features special items from Sylvia B. The committee would appreciate receiving ideas and suggestions for future displays. Residents who have an item or items they would like to share can contact any committee member. It is not necessary to have a collection. Perhaps there is one particular item you would be interested in seeing displayed in the cabinet, or maybe you have an idea for a theme. Any items or ideas you share will be appreciated. Committee members: Sylvia B., Minnie B., Mary D., Therese D., Helen R. Please stop by to check out Sylvia s display in the curio cabinet, her work is absolutely beautiful! Thank you for sharing it with us Sylvia. On Wednesday, Lake Forest broke ground to start construction on the new duplex that is being built!
4 Please join the Clinton County Historical Association (CCHA) on May 15, 2018 here at Lake Forest at 4pm for an exciting presentation by Makenzee Bruce! The presentation, which is free and open to the public, will enable participants to take a step back to a period more than 200 years ago to learn about the short-lived history of the Redford Glass Company. Although the company was in business for only 20 years they produced products that demonstrated unique skilled craftsmanship that survives to this day. By the end of the presentation participants will see how the Company, that was once famous and esteemed for its crown glass windowpanes, has become synonymous with unique and priceless glassware. Makenzee Bruce is currently an intern at the Clinton County Historical Association. She is also a senior studying History at SUNY Plattsburgh. During her time at SUNY Plattsburgh she received various awards and distinctions including membership in the National History Honor Society and Phi Alpha Theta. She has greatly enjoyed her time as an intern at the CCHA and hopes that everyone enjoys her presentation about the Redford Glass Company. Her presentation was made possible with the help and support of the Clinton County Historical Association with special recognition to CCHA Director Helen Nerska and Board Member Julie Dowd. In her research, ³The Saranac Valley² Volume One, Sarah Baker wrote that an old Indian ford across the Saranac River, formed of red stones, was destined to become a name known throughout the United States. The crossing became known as ³The Red Ford² and finally Redford, the site of the Redford Glass Company. Owners and chemist from the Champlain Glass Works in Burlington Vermont, along with hundreds of laborers, worked to construct the town and glass works, completed in 1831, that produced the famous Redford Glass. This week s movie on Wednesday May 16th is Bridge of Spies. During the Cold War, the Soviet Union captures U.S. pilot Francis Gary Powers after shooting down his U-2 spy plane. Sentenced to 10 years in prison, Powers' only hope is New York lawyer James Donovan (Tom Hanks), recruited by a CIA operative to negotiate his release. Donovan boards a plane to Berlin, hoping to win the young man's freedom through a prisoner exchange. If all goes well, the Russians would get Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance), the convicted spy who Donovan defended in court. Thank you to everyone that came to the Happy Hour this past Saturday, especially to Vladimir for his help! A HUGE thank you to Douglas for playing the bagpipes for us! It was such an unexpected but wonderful performance.
