The movie starts at 11:00 and we serve lunch to you at 12:00. This month Thursday, January 10th we are showing The Help a comedy that is guaranteed to make you laugh. 2 Upcoming Events All of our classes are open to everyone who would like to participate in them. Advanced Yoga Class, every Monday 8:45-9:45 the cost of the class is $10.00 or $45.00 for 5 classes. Gentle Yoga, every Monday 10:00-11:00 this class is for people new to yoga or those who experiencing joint sensitivity. This class focuses on building strength and relaxation through warm ups and a mixed series of postures as well as incorporating a mini gentle flow. Cost for one class is $10.00 or $45.00 for 5 classes. Zumba Gold, every Wednesday and Friday 9:00-10:00 the cost for one class is $5.00. Our instructor Kim Quay is a certified Zumba instructor and teaches at the YMCA in Glens Falls. T AI CHI CHIH, class is every Friday, 10:15-11:30 each session is an eight week session and the cost for a session is $ Accredited Instructor Judy Mirczak leads class instruction. She may be reached at Osteobusters Exercise Class, this new class will meet every Tuesday and Friday beginning Tuesday, January 8 th 9:00-10:00 and Friday, January 11 th 10:00-11:00. Osteobusters exercise and education program is a communitybased program for older adults who encourage participants to take steps to build and to maintain strong bones. It is presented in small group format and is led by trained, peer volunteers under the direction of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Warren, Washington, and Hamilton counties. There is no cost to this class and we look forward to having you participate with us. Lunch and a Movie, Come and enjoy a movie with us. Thursday, January 10 th the movie starts at 11:00 and we will serve lunch to you at 12:00. The cost of the movie and a meal is a $3.00 contribution to the Office for the Aging. We will be viewing The Help, it is an inspirational, courageous and empowering story about very different and extraordinary women in the 1960s South who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project one that breaks society s rules and puts them all at risk. Filled with humor and hope, this movie is a timeless universal and triumphant story about the ability to create change. Bingo, we are going to hold Bingo twice a month. It will be every second and fourth Monday of the month. Van Trips, starting January 2013 our shopping trips schedule has changed. We will no longer be using the van from Community Action but will be using the Town of Lake Luzerne s vehicle. The trips will be the first and third Thursday of every month leaving the Senior Center at 9:00. The van can only take three passengers; reservations are required so as not to disappoint anyone who may be planning on shopping. Please call to reserve your spot

3 Book Chat River of Doubt By: Candace Millard Contributed by Bob Freedman Although somewhat tedious in many places, it will hold the interest of those who like history, exploration, and adventure the book chronicles Teddy Roosevelt s trip to South America in Specifically, his 800 mile trip through the jungle in Brazil, and the discovery of an uncharted river. Written in much the same manner as Unbroken, this true story describes Roosevelt s strong will to survive and his love and search for adventure in an unknown, desolate rain forest where survival becomes the central theme. Before ending this journey he and his companions face many hardships including; cannibals, disease, and starvation. After his defeat in his final campaign for the Presidency in 1912, he is in search of something that will add to his legacy. His search is finally satisfied with the expedition described above. Many aspects of human behavior are represented by the various personalities that accompany Roosevelt on his journey up The River of Doubt. These range from the exploitive Father Zahm, and the rational Cherrie to the very volatile and dangerous, Julio. Most important is the relationship between the ex-president and his son Kermit (who also accompanies him into the jungles of Brazil). The mutual admiration and love between the two men appear throughout the tale and it becomes a major theme of the entire book. The reader will learn a great deal about the intricate ecology and geography of the Rain Forest. The great detail that is given to this topic was most interesting and revealing. Danger is spelled with a capital D as the animals, insects, plants and creatures that are found in the river. All are given adequate coverage. Especially, the many insertions dealing with the human inhabitants of the region. The author s research is almost too extensive, if that can ever be said of an historical account of an event. In this regard facts are presented from never-before-seen diaries and extensive resources from National Geographic so that the startling details of Roosevelt s final adventure come to the surface. Once again, I don t think this tale will not appeal to a wide audience, but I will leave you to be the final judge of that thought. I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I can't figure out how to get started." Her neighbor asks, "What is it supposed to be when it's finished?" The little silver haired lady says, "According to the picture on the box, it's a rooster." Her neighbor decides to go over and help with the puzzle. She lets him in and shows him where she has the puzzle spread all over the table. He studies the pieces for a moment, then looks at the box, then turns to her and says, "First of all, no matter what we do, we're not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything resembling a rooster." He takes her hand and says, "Secondly, I want you to relax. Let's have a nice cup of tea, and then," he said with a deep sigh... "Let's put all the Corn Flakes back in the box."
