1 Highlights: Highlights concerning Leaf vegetables 21/Nov/2018 An E. coli O157:H7 outbreak linked to romaine lettuce has been reported in the USA and Canada. So far 55 people have been E. coli O157:H7 outbreak linked to romaine lettuce in USA reported ill across 11 US states and 2 Canadian and Canada provinces. This is the second E. coli outbreak this year linked to romaine lettuce and it has lead to to romaine producers calling for a voluntary industry-wide recall of all brands and forms of romaine lettuce. Highlights concerning General information 21/Nov/2018 EFSA have concluded that dietary exposure to dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs is a health concern and, following a risk assessment, they have lowered the tolerable weekly intake (TWI) to 2 picograms per kg of body weight, 7 times lower than the previous tolerable intake level. The most recent person to develop listeriosis linked to the products became ill on the 4th of October Highlights concerning Seafood 22/Nov/ tonnes of Norway lobster (langoustine) 150 tonnes of have been seized in Spain as part of an operation called Pinza Roja. The products, es- langoustine seized timated to be worth around 4.5 million, did not have the correct traceability documentation. During inspections the authorities also discovered 165 bags of antioxidants, normally used for the preservation of crustaceans, which they believed to be an unusually high amount for the company being inspected. Samples of the products have been sent to a laboratory to see if the levels of sulphites and preservatives are higher than allowed.
