1 Highlights: Highlights concerning Seafood 08/Aug/2018 Following a tip off received by federal Fraud in Chesapeake agents in the USA and a probe into Chesapeake blue crab meat, Federal prosecutors blue crab meat allege that Casey's Seafood sold 398,000 lbs of Chesapeake blue crab meat, mixed with cut-rate crab from other countries such as Brazil and Indonesia, and labelled it as an American product. It is believed the retail value of the crab was roughly $14,000,000 at current prices. This follows previous issues with adulterated Chesapeake blue crab, such as the discovery that 38% of crab cakes declared as "Chesapeake Bay blue crab cakes" were adulterated and were actually made using imported crab following a study carried out by Oceana and highlighted in HorizonScan back in April of Highlights concerning Oilseeds 08/Aug/2018 Following the HorizonScan highlight of 19th Salmonella in sesame March 2018 regarding an increasing issue concerning Salmonella in sesame seeds seeds from Nige- ria from Nigeria, this issue continues to grow. Since the highlight in March of this year there have been 24 further alerts received from several countries across the EU and the

Highlights concerning General information 09/Aug/2018 Following the HorizonScan highlight of 26th Cyclosporiasis cases July 2017, highlighting that 2017 was the continue to increase third successive year that there has been a in UK rise in the number of people suffering from cyclosporiasis in the UK linked to Mexico, Public Health England are currently investigating an increase in the number of cyclosporiasis cases in the UK for the fourth consecutive year. So far in cases have been reported (up to the beginning of August 2018), with 46 of those infected having travelled to Mexico. Highlights concerning Cereals - unprocessed 09/Aug/2018 An emerging issue has been picked up in HorizonScan concerning rice originating from Japan contaminated with cadmium. Cadmium in rice from Japan Highlights concerning Poultry meat and poultry products 13/Aug/2018 Egg producers are being reminded to remain Salmonella in eggs vigilant for Salmonella contamination following the release of three separate recalls from three EU countries since the beginning of August. Germany, Italy and Malta have all issued recalls for domestically produced eggs possibly contaminated with Salmonella. The Maltese egg recall is an emerging issue as it is the first time that HorizonScan has seen a recall for eggs from Malta due to the presence of Salmonella. These recalls and reminder for vigilance follow concerns in regard to a recent rise in Salmonella infections which has ended a decade-long decline.

3 Page 3 of 12 Highlights concerning General information 13/Aug/2018 The Agricultrual Ministry of Udmurtia Republic in Russia has reported that 17 tonnes and avian influenza African swine fever of chicken and turkey meat were discovered found in Russian to be contaminated with avian influenza (no meat information on the strain or whether it is dangerous to humans has been provided). This follows a HorizonScan highlight from the 18th of May 2017 which reported the discovery of AI in turkey on supermarket shelves in Russia. The Russian veterinary body Rosselhoznadzor has also revealed the discovery of meat products containing the African swine fever genome in 7 regions of the country over the past few weeks. Highlights concerning Seafood 14/Aug/2018 The Spanish Civil Guard has seized 45 Frozen tuna adulterated marketed as tonnes of frozen tuna in 4 different provinces in Spain. The tuna was frozen and only fresh authorised for canned consumption, but after thawing it was treated with additives to give it the appearance of being fresh. It was then marketed as fresh tuna, quadrupling its market value. 4 people are being investigated for fraud as part of the investigation. 14/Aug/2018 A report in May from the Chinese state media outlet CCTV revealed that a third of fish na to be classed as All salmonids in Chi- sold as salmon in China was actually farmed salmon rainbow trout. Following a backlash from consumers as a result of this discovery, the China Aquatic Products Processing and Marketing Alliance has announced that 'salmon' will be the umbrella name for all fish in the salmonid family.
