1 Highlights: Highlights concerning Tree nuts (shelled or unshelled) 21/Feb/2018 Following on from the HorizonScan highlight yesterday regarding high levels of hydrogen cyanide in apricot kernels, a further RASFF alert has been released today by Germany which includes a country of origin (Pakistan). The kernels have been distributed to the following countries; Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom Cyanide in apricot kernels Highlights concerning Oils and fats 21/Feb/2018 The Cochin Oil Merchants Association (CO- MA) in India, tested 31 coconut oil brands from across the state of Kerala. It found 21 of these samples were adulterated. Amongst the contaminants found in the coconut oil samples were palm oil and iodine. Three RASFF alerts have been released by Poland this week in regard to this issue.

They claim that manufacturers are importing maize flour from Vietnam and Thailand to add to the sago causing prices of tapioca and sago starch to fall. Highlights concerning Seafood 22/Feb/2018 A RASFF notification has been released by Italy regarding an outbreak of scombroid Scombroid outbreak linked to marlin fillets syndrome caused by histamine in defrosted marlin fillets originating from Spain. Highlights concerning Spices - fruits and berries 26/Feb/ kg of adulterated chilli powder have been seized following a raid carried out by Food safety officials, the Commissioner s Task Force (CTF) and Bhavanipuram police. The chilli powder was being prepared with chilli waste (above permissible limits) and sawdust. A number of fake brand labels were also found.
