Shigella in chilli peppers Highlights concerning Berries and small fruit 18/Jul/2018 An increasing issue has been picked up by HorizonScan regarding goji berries from Pesticides in goji berries China contaminated with various pesticides. Alerts have been received from the USA and a number of European countries over the past months, with 7 received from the USA in July 2018 alone. Highlights concerning Seafood 18/Jul/2018 An increasing issue has been picked up by HorizonScan regarding dried algae from Spain containing high levels of Iodine. 5 alerts have been received since the beginning of June 2018 from Germany, Slovenia and Croatia. So far around 20 illnesses have been reported linked to pasta salads across 4 states. Highlights concerning Meat and meat products (excluding poultry) 19/Jul/2018 A RASFF report has been released concerning Salmonella enterica a Salmonella enterica ser. Typhimurium outbreak linked to outbreak linked to vacuum-packed pork pork tenderloins from Spain. Highlights concerning Processed foods 19/Jul/ people have fallen ill in Spain after consuming jars of preserved chard thought to be contaminated with the weed Datura stramonium (a member of the nightshade family). The weed contains the toxic tropane alkaloids atropine, hyoscyamine and scopolamine and it is believed this is what has caused the illnesses. Tropane poisonings linked to preserved chard Highlights concerning Oilseeds 19/Jul/2018 Salmonella in sesame seeds from Sudan UPDATE: Increase in continues to be an issue. Last year a HorizonScan highlight (dated 27/07/2017) drew seeds contaminated Sudanese sesame attention to the increasing number of alerts with salmonella received from Greece in this regard, with 10 alerts received over a 7 month period at that point in time. A year on, this issue continues to grow, with 38 alerts received since January 2018 from Greece, Poland and Germany.

Following investigations, the CDC believe the outbreak is linked to raw turkey products. However, the epidemiological and laboratory evidence found a variety of possible sources, and those who have fallen ill have reported consuming turkey products of different types and brands from different locations. The strain of Salmonella reading involved in the outbreak is present in live turkeys as well as in many raw products, raising concerns this could be a widespread issue in the turkey industry. There is the potential of facing a much larger recall as the contaminated ingredient is widely used within the food industry. At this point in time there has not been any official recall issued by FDA (Food & Drug Administration) and the supplier of the whey powder has not been named. The fine originated from outstanding import tariffs that Qorteba International failed to pay on olive oil it had imported from Tunisia and Morocco. The imported oil was then blended with low quality Spanish olive oil that had been obtained in second extractions from olives used in the production of extra virgin olive oil. This blend was then sold as virgin olive oil in the United States at prices 40 percent lower than other Spanish and Italian olive oil and up to 100 percent lower than olive oils from California.
