2 GENERAL RULES 1. The Findlay Township Fair Board will exercise care in the protection of exhibits, but will not be responsible for the loss or damage from any cause including flood, fire or theft, or for any item that is not entered in the correct department. 2. The decision of the judge is FINAL. Premiums are paid based on Exhibitor s Entry. 3. Exhibit hall will be closed to the public during judging. 4. Entries MUST be picked up between 8:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 19, 2017 or on Sunday, August 20, 2017 between 12 noon and 2:00 p.m. Ticket Stubs must be shown to pick-up articles. The Fair Board will not be responsible for any exhibits that are not picked-up. 5. Premium checks for exhibits will be mailed to each individual. 6. YOUTH (AGE 18 AND UNDER) AND ADULTS WILL ENTER UNDER THE SAME DEPARTMENTS, BUT WILL BE JUDGED SEPARATELY. 7. 5 DEPARTMENT 12 ~ HAY AND GRAIN 1. Corn should be selected on the basic of uniformity of size, color, shape, kernel type, straightness of row, and completeness of coverages, also freedom from blemish. 2. Small grains should be bright, clean of chaff, dirt, weed seeds, broken kernels and straw. Color should be uniform. 3. Exhibits shall consist of one (1) one-quart jars (wide-mouth). 4. All farm crops must be of the current year s growth, except corn and buckwheat, which must be the growth of the previous year. SECTION 1 - GRAIN AND SEED CROPS Class 1. 6 DEPARTMENT 13 - VEGETABLES 1. In selecting vegetables for exhibiting, choose such specimens that would bring the highest market price. Do not select the largest; select medium size specimens. If possible do not mix varieties. 2. The following factors are generally used by vegetable judges: a. Trueness to variety type. If possible pick the Specimens from one variety. b. Uniformity in shape, size and color. c. Pick a perfect specimen, then select the others as similar to it as possible. Do not mix specimens of different maturity. d. Protect from dirt, disease, infection and mechanical damage. Select specimens without blemishes. e. Condition, maturity and high quality exhibits. f. Potatoes should not be washed, remove soil with a soft cloth or brush. g. Tomatoes should have stems removed. Carrots, beets, etc., should have tops (leaves) removed from vegetable, leaving about 2" of stem. 3. Read premium material carefully following all rules and regulations. If an entry calls for five specimens, be sure to exhibit that number, do not enter four or six. In any instance, your exhibits will be disqualified if the correct number is not entered. 4. 12 SECTION 2 - EDIBLE NUTS All nuts must have been grown in the fair s surrounding community the year prior to the current fair. Nuts must be hulled. Six specimens of each variety must be entered. 13 DEPARTMENT 15 ~BAKED GOODS SECTION 1 - BAKED GOODS MADE FROM SCRATCH 1. All products must have been made from scratch by the exhibitor. Premiums will not be paid for commercial products or box mixes. 2. Complete baked goods must be brought to the fair in or on disposable containers. Management will not be responsible for return of plates or containers. After the judging the fair will display only a portion of the product for the week. 3. Baked Goods will be judged on flavor, lightness, general appearance and crumb. Pies are judged on texture of crust and filling flavor. 4. No refrigeration is available, therefore items requiring refrigeration WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED (puddings, meringue, butter cream, whipped cream, cream cheese, custards or pies with eggs). Entries will be auctioned after judging. Please consider bringing extra baked goods for the bake sale as our local Food Bank will receive the proceeds Class 1. QUICK BREADS A. 15 Class 12. HERSHEY S COCOA CAKE CONTEST RULES: 1. Entry must be a layered cake made from scratch and frosted. 2. A minimum of 1/4 cup of Hershey s Cocoa must be used and listed in the recipe. 3. If the cake frosting is chocolate, Hershey s cocoa must be used and listed as Hershey s cocoa in the recipe. 4. NO competitor s candy, chocolate, flavored baking chips or peanut products may be used. 5. The entire Cake entry must be submitted for judging on cardboard or a disposable plate. 6. Recipe(s) must be submitted with the entry, printed on one side of 8-1/2" x 11" paper. Recipe must list all ingredients, quantities, and the preparation instructions. Entrant s name, address and phone number must be printed on the back side of all the pages. nd rd Premiums: 1st Place- $10 2 Place - $8 3 Place - $6 Class 13. HERSHEY S BAKING CHIPS COOKIE, BROWNIE OR BAR CONTEST RULES: 1. Exhibitor must be an individual (age 8 through and including 18 years ONLY). 2. Entry must be a plate of six (6) made from scratch cookies, brownies or bars. 3. A minimum of 1/4 cup of HERSHEY S BAKING CHIPS (any variety) must be used and listed as Hershey s and name the specific chip variety in the recipe. 4. If the entry has icing/drizzle, and the icing/drizzle is chocolate, HERSHEY S COCOA must be used and listed as HERSHEY S COCOA in the icing/drizzle recipe. 5. NO competitor s candy, chocolate, flavored baking chips or peanut products may be used. 6. Entry must be submitted for judging on a doily-covered cardboard. 7. 16 DEPARTMENT 16 - HOME PRODUCTS SECTION 1 - CANNED OR DRIED PRODUCTS 1. Canned fruits and vegetables to be judged on quality, general appearance and container. 2. Canned foods must be exhibited in standard mason-type, clear glass canning jars using a two-piece self-sealing lid (flat discs with metal screw band). Metal screw band may be applied for transporting but must be removed for exhibition. All others will be disqualified. 3. Personal names on canning jars will not be accepted. 20 DEPARTMENT 17 - FLORAL EXHIBITS 1. The use of or display of artificial flowers is prohibited and no premiums will be paid. 2. Plants positively will not be accepted for exhibition unless they have been growing in containers for two months. 3. The management will not undertake to return exhibits or be responsible for the return of exhibits. Baskets or containers must be clean and be supplied by the exhibitor and will be given every possible care, but management assumes no responsibility for their safety. 4. Flowers and plants entered for competition must be more than ordinary standard quality to be entitled to an award. 5. All entries must be grown by the exhibitor except in the arrangement classes. 6. 21 SECTION 3 - SPECIMEN FLOWERS - ANNUALS 1. Exhibits in this division must be cut flowers grown by the exhibitor and must conform to the number of blooms, spikes or stems specified in each class. 2. The uniformity of height, color or size is an evaluating factor. 3. Flowers in each entry must be a one color variety unless otherwise stated. 4. Standard vase like containers to fit specimen.
