18 THE WORLD WINE AND SPIRITS MARKET & OUTLOOK TO 2017 From the Vinexpo/the IWSR Study Vinexpo, the world s premier international wine and spirits exhibition, has for the 12 th consecutive year commissioned an in-depth survey of world wine and spirits consumption, production and international trade, with five year forecasts up to 2017, by market intelligence provider International Wine and Spirits Research (The IWSR - Established in 1971, is the widest, most detailed and most accurate source of information on the worldwide market of alcoholic beverages). The latest study covers 28 producing countries and 114 consumer markets. THE WINE MARKET Asia-Pacific will consume more than 4 billion bottles of wine in 2017 Asia-Pacific remains in third place after Europe and the Americas among the top wineconsuming continents in the world but its consumption growth rate is highest. In 2013, the region consumed million 9-litre cases (i.e billion bottles) of still and sparkling wines, according to the Vinexpo/The IWSR study. But between 2013 and 2017, Asia-Pacific is expected to record the highest growth of consumption by 22.84%, reaching million 9-litre cases. In comparison, European consumption is expected to marginally fall over the same period by 0.14%, while modest growth of 9.05% is predicted in the Americas. China pauses in 2013 but retains growth After a decade of uninterrupted growth at around 25% annually, Chinese wine consumption is expected to pause slightly in 2013, down 2.2%. But the decrease is not impacting imported wines, with sales continuing to grow. Only consumption of domestic wines, accounting for 82.7% of the China market, has decreased. However, following the temporary hangover, Chinese wine consumption will return to growth between 2013 and In the next five years, consumption is expected to rise by 33.8%, reaching 230 million 9-litre cases by

19 and becomes the world s leading red wine consumer China, including Hong Kong, is now the largest red wine market worldwide, with consumption reaching more than 155 million 9-litre cases, or billion bottles, in 2013 up 136% from France is in second place, accounting for nearly 150 million cases, followed by Italy with 141 million. Chinese consumers have become increasingly attracted to red wine. Between 2007 and 2013, red wine consumption multiplied by 2.75 times in China, while decreasing by 18% in France and 5.8% in Italy. The U.S. holds on to its status as leading wine market worldwide Since 2011, the U.S. has been the largest wine consuming nation worldwide, ahead of France and Italy. Over the last five years, growth in the American market has not faltered, increasing by 11.36% between 2008 and In the next five years, growth of 14% is expected, reaching million cases, equivalent to 4.6 billion bottles. Three fast-growing wine segments: sparkling, rosés and premium While overall wine consumption worldwide grew by 3.23% between 2008 and 2012, consumption of sparkling wines, which accounts for 7.9%, outpaced the overall segment, increasing by 5.66%. At the same time, rosé wine consumption, which represents 9.1%, showed even stronger growth of 7.66%, while still light wines sold at more than US$10 a bottle rose by 21.8%. Clearly, these three specific segments in the wine market are the fastest-growing. International wine trading is growing twice as fast as world consumption In 2012, more than one bottle out of four 27% consumed anywhere in the world was an imported still light wine. It is apparent that consumers are increasingly seeking something different as they develop an interest in wines from elsewhere in the world and are able to acquire it. From 2008 and 2012, this preference for international wines grew by 7.39% 2.3 times faster than growth in overall world consumption. 19

20 Imported wines account for half of Asia-Pacific sales of still light wines Imported still light wines accounted for 26% of wine consumed in Asia-Pacific and 48% of the total value in Between 2013 and 2017, consumption in the region is expected to increase by 27.7%, reaching 99 million cases or 1.19 billion bottles. THE SPIRITS MARKET Asia-Pacific is the world s largest spirits consumer The Asian-Pacific remains the world s largest spirits consumer, with consumption accounting for 62.76% of the total volume in This was the result of 55% growth in volumes consumed between 2008 and While consumption will continue to grow between 2013 and 2017, the rate is expected to slow, increasing by 9.04% over the period. Baijiu, a white spirit distilled from sorghum, wheat or rice mainly drunk in China, accounted for 38% of the total volume of spirits consumed worldwide in More drinkers of brandy, rum, bourbon and tequila Consumption of brandy, excluding Cognac and Armagnac, grew by 45.6% between 2008 and Rum is popular all over the world. Its three largest markets are India, the U.S. and the Philippines. White rum is particularly favoured. Bourbon, most popular in the United States, Germany, Australia and UK, enjoyed 16% growth between 2008 and 2012, as consumption of tequila grew by 11.8%. Whisky picks up again After declining in 2008 and 2009, world consumption of Scotch bounced back with a return to growth of 5.46% from 2009 to Asia-Pacific is a developing market for international spirits brands Imported spirits only command a 2.1% market share in Asia, where consumption is dominated by locally produced brands. Growth in the next five years is expected to be on par with the market at 8.9%.Australia, India, China and Vietnam are displaying rapid growth in the volumes of spirits they are importing. 20

23 VINEXPO NIPPON IN TOKYO 2014, NOVEMBER 1-2 VINEXPO BUILDS ON ITS PRESENCE IN ASIA-PACIFIC LAUNCHING VINEXPO NIPPON IN TOKYO Vinexpo is launching Vinexpo Nippon, a new exhibition exclusively for the Japanese wine and spirits trade. The first show will be held in Tokyo on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd November 2014 at Prince Park Tower in the capital s business quarter. An exhibition made to measure Designed specifically for professionals working in the Japanese market, Vinexpo Nippon will host 200 international exhibitors with 2,400 sq. m (21,500 sq. ft.) of stand space. This new B-to-B exhibition format is more business oriented than the exhibitions in Hong Kong, scheduled for just two days. The goal is to allow exhibitors to take part in the exhibition as easily as possible by offering turnkey stands, customised services and involving importers. Exhibitors can therefore choose to be present at the show under their own name and booth, or represented by their importers by banner or signage. Supported by Japanese professionals Vinexpo Nippon has been supported by key Japanese players in the wine and spirits sector. Around ten importers gathered to support the exhibition months ago and will promote the show extensively throughout Japan. The event will benefit from all Vinexpo s expertise in organising exclusive international shows, as well as leveraging its deep knowledge of the market. A market with promise Japan is the third largest world economy after the U.S. and China, and its population enjoys one of the world s highest living standards and level of development. The wine and spirits market is one of the key economic drivers in Japan, which is one of the liveliest in Asia-Pacific, recording a 19.3% growth between 2008 and Japan is the leading Asian importer of spirits and the second largest importer of wines. There are a total of 178,000 sales outlets in the country. Find out more on the exhibition website: 23
