4 OCTOBER RESIDENT OF THE MONTH Ann Negro Birthdate: July 1, 1927 Children: 10 Grandchildren: 32 Great Grandchildren: 37 Ann was born in Eldora, Iowa. She grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Ann attended Mt. Mercy Academy High school which was also a Junior College back in the early 1940 s. Ann was a stay at home mom. She enjoyed raising her family and once her children were grown she went to work at St. Matthew s Catholic School. She ran the cafeteria for 8 10 years. Ann s family stated that she is an amazing cook. She is a life long member of St. Matthew s Catholic Church. Ann grew up across the street from the church and on her wedding day Ann got ready in her family home and walked across the street to get married! Ann enjoys bingo, adult coloring books, knitting blankets and wash rags. She and her family have knitted thousands of wash rags. Ann s favorite thing to do is spend time with her family. Ann s children say, she is the BEST MOM EVER. Ann has been a resident since June We are glad you are here and part of the Hiawatha Care Center family. HIAWATHA CARE CENTER EMPLOYEE MORALE TEAM IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE, NANCY YOUNG, RNC, B.S. DIRECTOR OF NURSING AS OUR EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH FOR OCTOBER 2018! Nancy has been here since the building originally opened in 1995 and they have continued construction around her! She can be found working at all hours of the day or night, whenever needed. Nancy is married to Gary Young, PhD. They have three sons that are all currently active in the United States Military. She is in love with all of her grandchildren and her family means the world to her. Nancy s devotion and dedication to Hiawatha Care Center s residents and staff is exemplary, as well as her passion for long term care and nursing in general. She is a walking medical chart that holds all information regarding everyone that she cares for. It is an honor and a privilege to work side by side with her. The only thing that she needs to work on is that she is a Nebraska, Purdue and Iowa State Fan! Congratulations Nancy, well deserved! Congratulations Ann!

10 ESTIMATED PEAK VIEWING TIMES FOR FALL COLORS WEEKLY COLOR REPORT Northwest & North Central Almost everything is still very green. They are starting to see some urban maples turn slightly. The sumac is just starting to turn red. The walnut trees are in the process of dropping their leaves. Estimated Peak Viewing: Around October 12 Northeast The Ash, Walnut, and some Hickory are showing more yellow. The Aspen stands and a hand full of maple are also showing some yellow. The bright yellows and oranges are nearing, but not quite here yet. Estimated Peak Viewing: October 13 Central Most trees are still mostly showing green. Some are starting to show yellow or have been yellow for a short time such as walnuts. Ohio buckeyes have red leaves in some areas. Estimated Peak Viewing: Third week of October. West Central & Southwest The Loess Hills now know that fall is upon them. Cottonwood, dogwood, sumac and ash are beginning to show their fall colors. The prairies are changing rapidly with fall flowers in full bloom and the native grasses are showing their blues, purples and browns. Estimated Peak Viewing: Second to third week of October. South Central Cottonwood, elm, green ash, and walnut in the bottomlands are changing to yellow and dropping. Sumac, dogwood, Virginia creeper, and ivy have nice reddish-purple color. White ash is starting to show purple color. The upland landscape is still mostly green. Estimated Peak Viewing: Second to third week of October. Southeast Some ash, cottonwood, and walnut starting to show some yellow. White ash and dogwood starting to show some purple. This is just the start of colors and most everything else is still green. 11 Christmas Shopping Spree November 13th, 14th & 15th Long term care residents will be able to shop this week. It's that time again for our Christmas Shopping Spree! This is a time for our residents to come into our store and pick out gifts for their loved ones. These items are donated by our vendors, staff, and local merchants. The residents do not pay a thing to participate in this event. We began doing this about 15 years ago because most of our residents are unable to go out shopping during the holiday season. They receive gifts and they want to give one back. So... We bring the store to them! THIS IS JUST FOR THE RESIDENTS! IT IS A SECRET AS TO WHAT THEY PICK OUT FOR THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS.
