PATRICK S DAY Written by Resident Columnist, Barbara Ashby St. Patrick s Day was first celebrated in America in 1737, organized by the charitable Irish Society of Boston, including a feast and religious service. This holiday is celebrated every year on March 17th, honoring the Irish patron saint, St. Patrick. People all over the world celebrate St. Patrick s Day, especially places with large Irish communities. Cities that hold large parades are: Boston, New York, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Savannah, and other cities worldwide. There are many legends associated with St. Patrick. The symbol of the shamrock used for St. Patrick s Day comes from the story of St. Patrick using the shamrock to illustrate the Holy Trinity. Early celebrations continued after the charitable Irish Society of Boston. In New York, the first celebration took place as a small gathering at the house of an Irish protestant. St. Patrick s Day parades started in New York in 1762 by a small group of Irish soldiers in the Boston military. Parades and wearing green have always been a traditional part of St. Patrick s Day Celebrations. Chicago dyes its river green for the festivities. The White House fountain is also dyed green. Other incorporations of green in Seattle, the parade routes are painted in green. Observers are supposed to wear green or else risk being pinched. Parade floats and decorations feature the color green. So...to all of you- Have a HAPPY St. Patrick s Day! 6 MARCH 2015 EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH St. Joseph's Day Written by Resident Columnist, Barbara Ashby The Feast of St. Joseph's Day on March 19th is in Western Christianity, the principal feast day of St. Joseph, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He is also the step-father of Jesus of Nazareth. It has the rank of a solemnity in the Roman Catholic Church. It is a feast or festival in the Lutheran Church. St. Joseph's Day is the Patronal Feast Day for Poland, as well as for Canada, for persons named Joseph, Josephine, etc., for religious institutions, schools and parishes bearing his name, and for carpenters. 7 FAMILIES If your family member has a physician who DOES NOT come to HCC to see them, you will need to schedule appointments to be seen twice a year. THIS IS A REGULATION FROM THE STATE! HCC will be more than happy to help set up transportation and will send any information the physician needs to the appointment. If you don't know if your physician visits HCC, please call me to ask. 8 GROUNDHOG DAY WINNERS MARCH RESIDENT OF THE MONTH Thomas Vasos Birthdate: January 22, 1921 Children: Barb Knockel & Ann Morris 5 Grandchildren 3 Great Grandchildren Tom was born in Miami, Iowa. Miami was a railroad town which no longer exists. Tom grew up in Clinton, Iowa. He lived between the railroad and the Mississippi River. He hung out a lot on Beaver Island which is on the Mississippi River. He did a lot of fishing and hunting during the depression. Tom attended Clinton High School and graduated in He did not want to be drafted into the Army so he enlisted into the Navy in 1941 so he had a choice. He fought in WWII in the South Pacific. He was a 2nd Class Gunner Mate on motor torpedo boats. He met his soon-to-be wife, Jean while he was attending Coe College. Jean was working at a drugstore. Tom accused Jean of short changing him and asked her to go out to a bar. Jean hid in a corner in the bar due to not being old enough. He married Jean on June 9, 1945 in Newport, Rhode Island. He was currently working as an instructor at a training base in charge of the fire range. By marrying Jean he made enough points to stay in the states and not have to go back overseas. They eventually moved back to Cedar Rapids in 1946 and lived with Jean s parents until At that time they built their own home and currently still have the same house. Tom retired from Cherry Burrell 31 years ago. He worked in the machine shop. Tom and his wife, Jean, have been residents at Hiawatha Care Center since October of We are glad that you are here and part of the Hiawatha Care Center Family.
