4 AUGUST RESIDENT OF THE MONTH Merton Krumrei Birthday: July 7, 1928 Family: wife, Martha and 4 Sons 5 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren HIAWATHA CARE CENTER S EMPLOYEE MORALE TEAM IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE, Merton grew up in Aphelstane, Wisconsin. He worked at his father s grocery store. He joined the Army after high school and was stationed in Buckingham, Kentucky. Merton and Martha met on a blind date on July 4th, 1952 in Evansdale, Indiana. They married Easter Sunday in They have been married 62 years. Merton enjoyed being in the woods and also square dancing. He owned a tree farm in Wisconsin and they grew pine trees. Merton sold insurance for Modern Woodmen Insurance company in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and was eventually transferred to Cedar Rapids to continue selling insurance. Merton s family means everything to him. He enjoys spending time with his family. Merton has been a resident of Hiawatha Care Center since November Congratulations Merton, we are glad you are here and part of the Hiawatha Care Center family. 8 THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER July 3 - August 11 Written by Resident Columnist, Barbara Ashby I was a child when I first heard the term "Dog Days of Summer." I thought and thought about it and then my parents explained it to me, those days were the hottest and muggiest of the season. But where does the term come from? Why do we call the hot, sultry days of summer, "dog days?" In ancient times, when the night sky was unobscured by the artificial light and smog, different groups of people in the different parts of the world drew images in the sky by "connecting the dots" of the stars. These star pictures are now called constellations, and the constellations that are now mapped out in the sky come from our European ancestors. They saw images of bears, (Ursa Major and Ursa Minor/ twins, (Genuine), a bull (Taurus), and others, including dogs, (Canis Major and Canis Minor). The brightest of the stars in the Canis Major (the big dog) is Sirius, which also happens to be the brightest star in the night sky. In fact, it is so bright that the ancient Romans thought that the earth received heat from it. Look for it in the southern sky (viewed from northern latitudes) during January. So, parents, how about getting the children together, talking about all of this, and seeing what follows? I'm sure it will all be fun and the children will love peeking at the sky - plus learning. 10 RAGBRAI It was a great day last week when RAGBRAI came to visit us. Wasn t it fun and festive? To top it off we had the band: THE LEGENDARY RYEMERS! Were they good? Oh, my, you couldn t beat them! They were: Bob Sanders Joseph Ervant Tim Hunziker FROM: TEAM SPRINT BIKE CLUB! Let s hope we can have them again and enjoy their great MUSIC and SPIRIT! WE COULD NOT OF MADE THIS HAPPEN SO SUCCESSFULLY WITHOUT THE GREAT HELP FROM OUR STAFF, RESIDENTS, FAMILIES AND VOLUNTEERS! YOU ALL ARE WHAT MAKE HIAWATHA CARE CENTER THE SPECIAL PLACE THAT IT IS! THANK YOU SO MUCH AGAIN TO ALL OF YOU!!!!!! LEE FROM TALL DOG BIKE CLUB GAVE OUR RESIDENTS ONE OF HIS HOMEMADE CRIBBAGE BOARDS AND PLAYED A GAME WITH THEM!

11 We were also contacted by: ALL ABILITY CYCLES out of Jefferson, IA. They arrived at our facility on Friday morning with their Wheelchair Adaptive Bicycles and gave more than a dozen of our residents rides on bicycles! It was AMAZING! Many of our residents claimed that felt young again! They even gave them rides on the RAGBRAI route along with the RAGBRAI riders!
