IPOST INFORMATION Everyone who is admitted to our facility fills out an Advanced Directives form. The major hospitals in Cedar Rapids have been testing a new form of Advanced Directives and this form is now being required. It is called an IPOST (Iowa Physician Orders for Scope of Treatment). The purpose of adopting this form is to standardize the Advanced Directives that all healthcare facilities use. Several families have met with me already and an IPOST has been completed. The goal is for everyone in a LTC facility to have an IPOST on file that goes with them to the hospital ect. I need to meet with the POA/HC of the residents who still need IPOSTS completed and get this done. Please look me up when you are in the facility or call and arrange a time that is convenient to meet. It would be much appreciated. Thank you, Nancy Young DON or

8 Doesn t seem possible but FLU SEASON is just around the corner. We are encouraging residents, staff and family members to get vaccinated. Flu shots will be given at HCC in October. If, for some reason you or your family member do not wish to receive a vaccination this year, please let Nancy know. WHY SHOULD YOU GET VACCINATED? Influenza (flu) is a contagious disease, which spreads from person to person through coughing and sneezing or nasal secretions. For most people, it only lasts a few days. Symptoms of influenza include: * Fever * Sore throat * Chills * Fatigue * Cough * Headache * Muscle aches Worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma or diabetes The influenza vaccine is recommended for people who are at risk of complications from influenza and for people who can spread influenza to those at high risk. People at high risk for complications from influenza include: * People 65 years of age or older * Residents of long-term care facilities * People who have the following health problems: *Heart disease * Kidney disease *Lung disease *Asthma *Metabolic disease, such as diabetesmuscle/nerve disorders-weakened Immune system(due to HIV/AIDS, cancer or steroid treatment) For most people int influenza vaccine prevents serious influenza-related illness. It will not prevent influenza-like illnesses caused by other viruses. WHEN SHOULD YOU GET VACCINATED? Influenza viruses are always changing. Therefore, influenza vaccines are updated every year, and an annual vaccination is recommended. October and November are the best times to get vaccinated per physician guidelines. It takes about two weeks for protection to develop after the vaccination, and protection can last up to a year. POTENTIAL ADVERSE EFFECTS/NEGATIVE OUTCOMES OF RECEIVING THE VACCINE Potential side effects from the vaccine include: *Hoarseness, sore or dry eyes, cough, itchiness *Fever *Aches * Soreness, redness and/or swelling where the shot is given. Allergic reactions to influenza vaccine are rare. However, if you have a severe egg allergy, severe allergy to any vaccine component or you ve had a severe reaction after a previous dose of influenza vaccine, you should talk with your doctor, if you have ever had Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) or are presently ill. A vaccine, like any medicine, could cause serious problems, such as allergic reactions. The risk of a vaccine causing serious harm, or death, is extremely small. ATTENTION ALL RESIDENTS, FAMILIES, VISITORS & STAFF WHEN PUSHING A RESIDENT IN THEIR WHEELCHAIRS... FOOT PEDALS MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE WHEELCHAIR AND THE RESIDENT S FEET ON THEM! 10 LABOR DAY: What It Means Written by Resident Columnist, Barbara Ashby Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievement of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later on September 5, In 1884, the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country. The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation's strength, freedom and leadership -the American worker. ~Barbara Ashby The History of GRANDPARENT S DAY Written by Resident Columnist, Barbara Ashby National Grandparents Day falls each year on the first Sunday after Labor Day. It is not a holiday invented to sell cards and flowers. It was initiated at the grassroots level by West Virginian, Marion Lucille Herndon McQuade, with the behind-the-scenes support of her husband, Joseph L. McQuade. They had 15 children, 43 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. After being married for over 60 years, Mr. McQuade passed away in Mrs. McQuade passed away in There are three purposes for National Grandparents Day: 1. To honor grandparents 2. To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children's children. 3. To help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people offer. Grandparents are our continuing tie to the near-past, to the events and beliefs and experiences that so strongly affect our lives and the world around us. Whether they are our own or surrogate grandparents who fill some of the gaps in our mobile society, our senior generation also provides our society a link to our national heritage and traditions. We all know grandparents whose values transcend passing fads and pressures and who passes the wisdom of distilled pain and joy. Because they are usually free to love and guide and befriend the young without having to take responsibility for them, they can often reach out past pride and fear of failure and close the space between generations. Barbara Ashby GRANDPARENT S DAY IS SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13TH!
