Please join us for our Annual Garden Party on Thursday, June 25, 2014 at 6:45pm IN THE GARDEN AREA (weather permitting) Marjorie was born and raised in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She married Bill Pelley in June of Marjorie spent most of her life being a homemaker. She was a secretary for Coats Company for a few years. She lived in Wichita, Kansas to be close to her husband s family. She also lived in St. Louis, Missouri to be close to her daughter. When Marjorie s daughter s family moved back to Iowa, she came back with them. Marjorie has a brother that lives in Waterloo, Iowa, a sister in Rockford, Illinios and another sister in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Marjorie s mothers sister owned land in Las Vegas and California that she rented to Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. We are very excited to show off our WHISPER GLIDE SWING and show everyone how it works! Refreshments will be served! Marjorie had been a resident at HCC since March of Congratulations, Marjorie and we are glad you are a part of the Hiawatha Care Center family! A Father begins to build their life at an early age by preparing and setting the stage. He inspires us to show that he is there by always giving his love and his care. He works all day long to provide for his family at home. Often at times, I watched him as things got tight, and sometimes he wasn't able to hug us at night. But, being so tough and so strong he would always fix and make things right. So, to all these great Fathers that I honor today, It is you who loves us and paves the way! HAPPY FATHER S DAY! 9 JUNE 2014 FATHER'S DAY Written by Resident Columnist, Barbara Ashby There are two stories of when the first Father's Day was celebrated. According to some accounts, the first Father's Day was celebrated in Washington state on June 19, A woman by the name of Sonoma Smart Dodd came up with the idea of honoring and celebrating her father while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in church in RESIDENT ARTIST OF THE MONTH IS: MIRIAM CAVES STOP BY AND SEE THE PAINTING, IT IS ON DISPLAY FOR THE MONTH OUTSIDE THE DOOR OF THE ACTIVITY ROOM! Sonoma's dad was quite a man, William Smart, a veteran of the Civil War, was left a widower when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. He went on to raise the six children by himself on their small farm in Washington. To show her appreciation for all the hard work and love he gave to her and her siblings, Sonoma thought there should be a day to pay homage to him and other dads like him. She initially suggested June 5th, the anniversary of her father's death to be the designated day to celebrate Father's Day, but due to some bad planning, the celebration in Spokane, Washington was deferred to the 3rd Sunday in June. The other story of the first Father's Day in America happened on the other side of the country in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5th, Grace Golden Clayton suggested to the minister of the local Methodist Church that they hold services to celebrate fathers after a deadly mine explosion killed 361 men. Unofficial support to make the celebration a national holiday began almost immediately. William Jennings Bryant was one of its staunchist proponents. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge recommended that Father's Day become a national holiday. But no official action was taken. In 1966, Lyndon B. Johnson, through an executive order, designated the 3rd Sunday in June as the official day to celebrate Father's Day. However, it wasn't until 1972, during the Nixon administration, that Father's Day was officially recognized as a national holiday. This Father's Day, please let your father know just how much he means to you. Write him a card expressing some of the things you love and admire about him.
