4 NOVEMBER RESIDENT OF THE MONTH Marilyn Wicke Birthdate: October 30, 1930 Children: Mary Ellen, David, John, & Tom Grandchildren-12 Great Grandchildren-9 Marilyn was born in Marion, Iowa - at home! She grew up in Marion and graduated from Marion Independent School. She worked for North Western Bell as a telephone operator and for Collins Radio. Marilyn met her husband Dale, who is also a resident at HCC, through a mutual friend and they eventually married on September 3, When they started their family, Marilyn became a stay at home mother and returned to work later as a bank teller. While in Marion, she and Dale attended St. Joseph Catholic Church and following retirement moved to Cedar Rapids and attended St. Pius. She and Dale following retirement traveled to Hawaii, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Rome and Portugal. They loved to go dancing at the Armar, Danceland, and The Apartment in the basement of the Roosevelt. Marilyn enjoys reading and doing crossword puzzles. HCC would like to stress that if you re not feeling well or have been exposed to the flu, etc., please DO NOT come to visit your family member until you are healthy. We d like to keep everyone well. When visiting, please use the hand sanitizer solution upon arrival and before you leave. This protects you and our residents. THOROUGH HAND WASHING IS THE BEST PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE EVER INVENTED! Flu shots are currently being administered. Thank you for your help!

8 10/27/2018 ATTENTION ALL RESIDENTS AND FAMILY MEMBERS IF YOU OR YOUR LOVED ONE HAS A MINI REFRIGERATOR HUMIDIFIER OR DIFFUSER IN THEIR ROOM, PLEASE BE SURE THAT YOU ARE CHECKING IT WEEKLY TO BE SURE THAT THEY ARE CLEAN. REFRIGERATOR MUST HAVE A THERMOMETER IN THEM AND THE TEMPERATURE OF THE REFRIGERATOR NEEDS TO BE AT 35 TO 40 DEGREES. FOOD ITEMS THAT ARE PLACED IN THE REFIRGERATORS ARE TO BE LABELED WITH THE DATE AND WHAT THE ITEM IS. FOOD SHOULD BE LOOKED AT EVERY 3 DAYS. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE CONTANT ADMINISTRATION. THANK YOU NOTICE TO ALL FAMILY MEMBERS/ RESPONSIBLE PARTIES! As the holidays approach and always, please be sure to sign your loved ones out at the nurse s stations. A 24-hour advanced notice would be greatly appreciated due to meals and medication passes. Also, for those residents who use a Doctor outside of the facility, you need to start scheduling their appointments for next year. By state guidelines, your loved one needs to be seen twice a year (every 6 months). Please notify the nursing dept. when these appointments are scheduled. If this is not taken care of by families/ responsible parties, WE WILL DO IT FOR YOU!

9 November 2018 *The Meaning of Thanksgiving * The Real Celebration IT S THAT TIME AGAIN AND WE ARE WORKING ON OUR PAINTINGS FOR OUR ANNUAL CHRISTMAS CARD! STOP BY AND SEE THE PAINTINGS. THEY ARE ON DISPLAY FOR THE MONTH IN THE ACTIVITY ROOM! For many of us, the meaning of Thanksgiving usually includes feasting, four day weekends, football games, family reunions, or a forerunner to Christmas festivities. The first Thanksgiving, however, was neither a feast nor a holiday, but a simple gathering. Following the Mayflower s arrival at Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620, the Pilgrims suffered the loss of 46 of their original102 colonists. With the help of 91 Indians, the remaining Pilgrims survived the bitter winter and yielded a bountiful harvest in In celebration, a traditional English harvest festival, lasting three days, brought the Pilgrims and the natives to unite in a thanksgiving observance. The Thanksgiving meal would not be celebrated again until June of On June 29 the community of Charlestown, Massachusetts proclaimed a day of thanksgiving for their good fortune. Ironically, this celebration excluded the Indians, as the colonists recognized their recent victory over the heathen natives. One hundred years later, in October of 1777, all 13 colonies participated in a one-time thanksgiving celebration which commemorated the patriotic victory over the British at Saratoga. It would take a span of over 150 more years to establish Thanksgiving as we celebrate it. George Washington proclaimed it a national holiday in Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November in 1863, and Congress sanctioned it as a legal holiday in The true meaning of Thanksgiving focuses upon relationship. Thanksgiving is a relationship between GOD and man. Upon their arrival at New Plymouth, the Pilgrims composed The Mayflower Compact, which honored GOD. Thanksgiving begins with acknowledging GOD as faithful, earnestly giving Him thanks, in advance, for his abundant blessings Thanksgiving is an attitude of the heart that reinforces an intimate relationship with GOD. I want to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving, being grateful for our many blessings. Bless you all!

11 Christmas Shopping Spree for Long term residents November 13th thru 15th, :00 a.m. each day It's that time again for our Christmas Shopping Spree. This is a time for our residents to come into our store and pick out gifts for their loved ones. These items are donated by our vendors, staff and local merchants. The residents do not pay a thing to participate in this event. We began doing this about 10 years ago, because some of our residents are unable to go out shopping during the holiday season. They are receiving gifts and they want to give back, so... We bring the store to them! THIS IS JUST FOR THE RESIDENTS! IT IS A SECRET AS TO WHAT THEY PICK OUT FOR THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS. NO FAMILY MEMBERS ARE ALLOWED TO THIS EVENT! Families will receive these gifts at our Annual Christmas Open House!
