2 President s Press MAY UPDATE The highlight fr the Guild this mnth was the Internatinal Night, which was vted an utstanding success by everybdy I have spken t. We had ver 90 peple in attendance which is the biggest number we have ever had at ne f these events. In my mind there were tw highlights frm the evening. Firstly the frmat we have develped where we shwcase members wines t thse in attendance. What a great way t prmte the great wines we make and encurage new members! Secndly, the entertainment prvided by the talented band f musicians cmprised f Guild members! The fd was great, the venue was great, the entertainment was great and the peple were great, what a great night! Please refer t the separate article in this newsletter written by Graham Sctt fr mre details. We must all acknwledge and thank the fllwing: Mari Anders fr rganising the night with the Venet Club, fr MC ing, fr rganising the raffle, fr rganising the tables, fr bking the classical guitarist etc etc etc Mari & Jeanne just d s much fr the Guild in the backgrund s prfessinally! COMMITTEE UPDATE The Cmmittee (Mari Anders, Nan Oates, Danny Cappellani, Trevr Sleep, Dark Prstruzin, Bill Bussau, Gary Campanella, Kass Mulvany) met n Wednesday 20 May and quite a large range f subjects were discussed, t many t cver in this newsletter. Cnsiderable time was spent discussing and fine tuning this year s frward prgram fr Guild Nights. There is plenty f scpe t mve in the frward prgram, s if yu have a theme r guest speaker in mind which wuld be f interest t members, please let ne f the Cmmittee knw. MEAD WORKSHOP The 3 rd and last mead wrkshp sessin was held n Saturday 16 th May. All the meads made at the wrkshp are cming alng really well. I can hear a sigh f relief frm the members rganising this event (Hamish Lucas, Graham Sctt, Danny Cappellani, Gary Campanella). Guild members will have an pprtunity t meet the peple attending the wrkshp and taste their meads at the June Guild Night. If yu are cnsidering making a mead, keep the JOA recipe used fr the wrkshp in mind, it is easy t make and a great utcme guaranteed. MONASH LABORATORY GLASSWARE Mari Andres was able t fllw up a lead prvided by Zenn Klasz in regard t the availability f labratry glassware, which was n lnger required by Mnash University. Mari picked up the glassware and it will be available fr cllectin by members at ur May Guild Night. Available will be beakers, pipettes, thermmeters etc etc which will be very useful t winemakers. NEXT GUILD NIGHT FRIDAY 29 MAY The guest speaker at ur next Guild Night is Nan Oates sn Steve Oates. Steve is currently the Sales Manager f Mitcheltn Winery. He has extensive experience with lcal wines and will discuss the impact f terrir n Heathcte wines. His presentatin will include wine tasting. 7 If yu are new t winemaking then aim t make fault-free, stable wine: that will land yu a scre in the 15 s t maybe a Brnze medal. A cmbinatin f at least sund fruit and sund winemaking practise incrprating cleanliness, minimising air cntact after fermentatin, sensible sulphite management and gd bttling practices will get yu mst the way there. If yu are cnfident with yur basic winemaking technique and have stepped up t using gd fruit, r understand hw t make the best f the fruit yu have then yu are ff t medal-mania! Well.. maybe yu still need t be making sund judgement during every step f the winemaking prcess, reflect n what yu have, tasting, crrecting and finishing thughtfully. If yu knw that yu ve captured true varietal character n appearance, nse and palate, and thers cncur with yu during yur trail tasting at Guild meetings, then yu may indeed be n yur way t medals; Brnze, maybe Silver. If yu ve dne all f the abve fr a little while nw, then it s time t GO FOR GOLD!! Start by understanding what yu are trying t achieve. Study previus Shw Results bks t understand what the judges are after fr the style yu intend t make. Seek great fruit, dn t cmprmise that Really understand the fruit that yu have, tasting and reflecting n what yu have Make all acid additins with purpse and nly if it is necessary. Whatever yu d make the additins BEFORE ferment starts. Use the mst apprpriate yeast Add fermentatin nutrient thughtfully and reflect f the type f nutrient yu will use (DAP, Vitamin B, rganic supplements) Manage caps thughtfully and in a manner apprpriate t the style If yu are making reds reflect hw advanced techniques f cap and skins management (pump ver, rack and return, heading dwn bards) may maximise yur target flavur prfile After yu ve achieved stability taste, taste, taste. Only fine and adjust with purpse and preferably a flavur prfile in mind. 8 EDWG INTERNATIONAL NIGHT 2015 If we are true t Je Illian s dictum, this is what the Guild is all abut. Yes, we want t make gd wine and f curse we d, dn t we? But Je always saw the sharing f wine amngst friends as the reasn why we made the bldy stuff in the first place. S the Internatinal Night at the Venet Club with an Italian theme was a perfect example f the Guild s raisn d être. We gathered ur friends arund us and we shared the wine. Big claps fr the way the Mari twins arranged it all. The rm, redlent f ur past Wine Shw activities, embraced us. The fd was delicius and filling an imprtant trait in Italian cuisine and fastidiusly served. The tw Italian wines n the table were lvely and dispatched with aplmb and smewhat reckless attitude t their prvenance and then we gt stuck int the REAL WINES. I m talking abut the centre table wines. These were engaging, aggressive, beguiling and dwnright left field at times. What a selectin! And after Gary had sld everyne n the merits f the first blck f wines an interesting event tk place. A crwd arrived arund the table and they didn t leave. They talked. They argued. And they wuldn t leave! Sme f us had tasks t d; I had t supply endless tastings f different wines t a discerning friend wh claimed t be maimed and culdn t mve frm his seat. He tk the lt! But the hard-cre grup did what the Guild always des s well. They argued. And after Danny arrived t sing the praises f the New Wrld Wines the crwd arund that pr little table were three deep and my maimed cmpatrit was getting grumpy. Listening t the talk thugh was a revelatin. I think it pints t the new breakut mdel f the Guild. The best cmments, the mst cncise judgements n the wines were cming frm the wmen. And they tk n backchat. A cuple f the men prduced simian grunted respnses and were scathingly dispatched. We dn t have t train up ur wmen; we need t get them t ur meetings!! They were acute, amazingly erudite (at that time f the night and when the men were in n shape t argue, that is a gd adjective t use!) and their evaluatin f the wines was spt n. I cheered quietly. Fittingly, the last blck f wines the Cuntry Wines - were nt a hard sell. The hard-cre grup was there right frm the first crk pening and didn t mve. They swayed a bit and went fr the cuspidr when the Beetrt wine was pened, but by Gd they tried it and argued abut it. Rise yur glasses t the Centre 8

9 Table Grupies! Mentin must be made f the entertainment. Lved the guitar player. He was a sure and certain tne underneath the chatter. But the Italian Interlude was the entertainment highlight. Hw cme these accmplished wine makers have time t becme s cultural? The Spiv in the hat was a delight, Michael s seriusness made us all take nte and Danny and his grgeus wife Kass gave us the inside feeling f Italy. Presenting wines were Julie and Andrew Game as well as Frank Galati. Cngratulatins t Danny Cappellani fr being invited t be ne f the wine judges. Frank Galati especially t be cngratulated fr taking hme the Best White Wine Award (Mscat 2014) and winning secnd prize in the cuntry wines (Apple/Pear/Sultana 2014). It seemed t wrk even if it did elicit funny lks frm nrmal peple every time I did it s I ve been passing n the advice t ther nvice tasters ever since. She says her trial is shwing by leaving the red grape skins in cntact with the wine, it can imprve flavur, clur and even reduce labur in the prcess.
