Moderate Fitness Activities These activities help to keep your heart, lungs and blood vessels healthy. You should aim to do 30 minutes of activity from this group on most days. This can be in three lots of 10 minutes or two lots of 15 minutes. If you are just starting out, as little as 10 minutes helps! Brisk walking, Swimming, Golf, Gym Strength Activities These activities help your muscles and bones stay strong as you get older. Make a time to do specific strength exercises two or three times a week and build some of them into your everyday activities if you are able. Weight, strength or resistance training exercises, lifting and carrying, moderate garden and house work. Flexibility Actvities These activities help you to move more easily. They include gentle reaching, bending and stretching. If you stay flexible you will always be able to put on your own shoes and socks. Try to do some form of stretching every day even if it is only while you are watching TV. Tai Chi, Bowls, Shopping, Vacuuming, Stretching Exercises, Yoga Balancing Actvities These activities will improve your balance and help to prevent falls. Make a specific time each day to do these exercises, or fit them in whenever you can for example while waiting for the kettle to boil. Side leg raises, half squats, heel raises If you can, also try to reduce the time you spend sitting down for long periods REMINDER Labelling of clothing Before placing new items of clothing in resident s wardrobe, please place them in a plastic bag and leave with Reception in order for Hospitality staff to label the clothing thereby reducing the possibility of missing items.

2 Editor: Deb Dutton, CEO, The Windmill Rembrandt Court Issue August 2018 Home Care Hub 1 Madras Street, Oaklands Park SA Greenfields Drive, Green Fields SA 5107 Ph The weekly newsletter of Rembrandt Living Ph UPDATE FROM ALEX, O.T. I would like to tell you all about what has been happening with our Allied Health team over the past couple of months. Approximately 10 weeks ago Rembrandt Court, for the first time, hosted Occupational Therapy students, Jesse and Holly, from UniSA for a community project placement. They came here enthusiastic, energetic and excited to create a new meaningful activity for residents living with cognitive loss. It was a large process that involved Holly and Jesse conducting surveys, meetings, informal chats, comparative needs and research. Numerous Ideas were brought forward including laughing group, gardening group, art classes etc but cooking class was the winner! They worked very hard to find recipes that were appropriate taking into account the differing dietary requirements of each participant and designed a detailed procedure of how the class can be run. They trialed 3 different cooking classes and the success was great. We saw residents getting actively involved, laughing, following recipes, and of course eating the delicious food they made as a group. Since then the students have developed all the resources necessary to ensure this popular activity can continue once their placement finishes. From the whole team and residents from Rembrandt, we would like to give a very BIG THANK YOU to the amazing work Jesse and Holly have done, you have enriched the residents lives, represented the Occupational Therapy Profession fantastically and we wish you the very best for the future. FOR YOUR INFORMATION Dr Lehmann will be on leave from Monday 20 August, returning on Monday 3 September. In his absence, Dr Patrick Wang will be on site on Monday 20 th, Monday 27 th and Friday 31 st of August (no Tuesdays or Thursdays). Please see nursing staff for an appointment if required. Joe had a wonderful day last Sunday when he was visited by his daughter, granddaughter and great grandchildren. The family had a lovely time in House 6 lounge. Joe s great grandsons were entertained with games and puzzles and his oh so gorgeous great granddaughter received a cuddle from Carer, Amita (love at first sight?)
