2 PROUD HISTORY There has been a public house on the site of The Bowling Green dating back to The original building was destroyed in a major fire in 1741 that accounted for many of the buildings on Coventry Street. The current Bowling Green pub was rebuilt in 1750 by Thornley s Brewery. It is famous as the starting point for the Lady Godiva annual commemorative procession on Spring Bank Holiday - a tradition that died out in the 1880 s. Francis Drake is reported to have played bowls at the pub in the days when it boasted a bowling green and tennis courts within its grounds. Southam is an old historic town developed on the Welsh Drovers cattle and sheep trail from Wales to the Midlands and London.
