2 ~Nutrition Talks By Daron Dewitt~ Happy February Blue Skies West! It is hard to believe we are one month down for 2019 already. I really enjoyed meeting everyone at January s DRAC. The topic for this month is: Low Calorie/No Calorie Sweeteners and Desserts. Low-calorie sweeteners are also called artificial sweeteners, sugar substitutes or nonnutritive sweeteners. They are used to sweeten food and drinks for less calories and carbohydrates when they replace sugar. Their sweetening power is intense. Most lowcalorie sweeteners are at least 100 times more intense than regular sugar, so a little goes a long way. These sweeteners are used by food companies to make diet drinks, baked goods, frozen desserts, candy, light yogurt and chewing gum. You can buy them to use as table-top sweeteners. Add them to coffee, tea, or on top of fruit. Some are available in granular versions which can be used in cooking and baking. With the exception of aspartame, all of the sweeteners listed below cannot be broken down by the body. They pass through our systems without being digested so they provide no extra calories. They are all regulated by the FDA and are GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status. These sweeteners are acesulfame K (Sweet One), aspartame (Equal), Neotame, Saccharin (Sweet N Low), Sucralose (Splenda) and Stevia (Truvia). Non-nutritive sweeteners can be part of a weight-management strategy. Keep in mind just consuming foods or drinks with these sweeteners won t result in weight loss or keep you from gaining weight. You must limit calories from other sources, too, and avoid replacing the calories saved with higher-calorie foods. For example, if you choose a beverage sweetened with non-nutritive sweeteners instead of a 150 calorie soft drink, but then reward yourself with a 300 calorie slice of cake or cookies later in the day, non-nutritive sweeteners are not going to help you control your weight because you added more calories to your day than you subtracted. Also, make it a habit to check the nutrition facts panel of a food containing non-nutritive sweeteners. Sometimes fat and other carbohydrate sources are sneaked in to make up for the lack of sugar. For people with diabetes, foods and drinks with non-nutritive sweeteners can satisfy a taste for sweetness without affecting insulin production or blood glucose levels. And, they can help with weight control, which is important for managing diabetes. The position statement of the American Diabetes Association states that, Non-nutritive sweeteners are safe when consumed within the daily intake levels established by the food and Drug Administration. ~ Dining Services Reservations Closing Times ~ Please call the appropriate reservations number for making your dining reservation. Breakfast and lunch are general seating and are on a first-come, firstserved basis. ~ Evening Meal Reservations ~ Dining Services require making a reservation for the evening meal service. Please, remember to make your evening reservations before 2pm. Any resident wanting to make a reservation for a party of 10 people or more must contact the Dining Room 48 hours in advance. There is an Advance Form, available in the Dining Services Office, for you to complete. The earliest time to make reservations for Dinner Services is one week in advance. ~ Dress Code Reminder ~ Please be courteous of your fellow residents by following the posted dress code for the Main Dining Room. Please keep in mind to remind your guests. ~Dining Services Website~ Morrison, in partnership with Blue Skies of Texas, is proud to bring you a communityspecific dining website directly linked to our daily feature menus. You can access information on upcoming meals and find additional information about the items being served, including nutritional information and ingredients. It is open to all residents, family and the general public; the website can be found by going to: and then select the community you would like to view. Each campus has a website dedicated to individual menus and venues. It is our hope this information helps you make better informed choices about your dining options. ~ Meal Deliveries ~ For those who may want their meals to be delivered, please call at these times; for Breakfast call by 8am, for Lunch call by 11am & for Dinner call by 4pm. For questions in regards to these times, please feel free to contact the Main Dining Room. Please Note: The Dinner times for To-Go services are 4:15-5pm. For any meals after that time frame, please check in at the Dinner Cashier Station and the staff will gladly put in your order for you. For your safety, please do not enter through the server door or the lunch entrance to the Main Dining Room, as this area is extremely busy with staff.
